Alcatel-Lucent passes milestone of 125 million Voice over IP licenses as 4G service providers drive to deploy Voice over LTE

Paris, February 17, 2014

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has globally shipped more than 125 million Voice over IP subscriber licenses around the world as service providers meet demands for ultra-broadband access to converged voice, video, data and new applications.

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) subscriber licenses comprised the bulk of Alcatel-Lucent’s shipments, with more than 88 million licenses issued.  With the deployment of VoLTE, operators will also be able to reduce operational costs by moving to an all IP network, free up precious spectrum to meet increasing demand for mobile broadband, and combine HD voice, video conferencing and data with the lightning speed of 4G LTE networks.

Focusing on VoLTE deployment aligns with Alcatel-Lucent’s industrial repositioning under The Shift Plan, transforming the company into a specialist in IP Networking and Ultra-Broadband Access to support service provider, web-scale and enterprise networks.

Diane Myers, Principal Analyst VoIP, UC and IMS, Infonetics Research: “IP communications is the path for today’s operator to remain relevant and meet marketing, end users and business customers expectations within increasingly condensed timeframes. It requires operators to build networks that can meet all of the requirements of faster, nimbler, and innovative without compromising network performance and availability. Alcatel-Lucent’s milestone is evidence of its knowhow in building IMS, VoIP, LTE and VoLTE networks.”

In the Infonetics Research report, “Service Provider VoIP and IMS Equipment and Subscribers Quarterly Worldwide and Regional Market Share, Size and Forecasts 4Q13,” Alcatel-Lucent is cited as the industry revenue leader for IMS, call session control function and IMS voice application servers for calendar year 2013.

Andrew McDonald, President, IP Platforms, Alcatel-Lucent: “Alcatel-Lucent provides an end-to-end VoLTE solution that includes IMS, Evolved Packet Core and RAN. This is important because VoLTE resets the bar for today’s new mobile voice by leveraging tight integration across the device and network. NAR operators will lead the deployment of VoLTE, but it is essential to mobile innovation around the globe.”

Alcatel-Lucent’s IMS communications provide New Conversation Experience APIs and APIs for real time communications across the web (WebRTC) to move multimedia communications from a standalone service to one embedded into any device, web page and applications. This allows operators to earn more by expanding their brand to reach new markets that are increasingly using mobile broadband and IP communications to drive service innovation such as heathcare, education, financial services, fleet management, etc.

Over 100 global service providers use Alcatel-Lucent’s IMS solution, which is the communications core for next generation IP networks, including 4G LTE and VoLTE. Alcatel-Lucent has more than 40 4G LTE customers, including a number in the process of deploying VoLTE.

Alcatel-Lucent will demonstrate the value of its VoLTE Solution at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, February 24-27, 2014, Hall #3, Booth #3K10 at the Fira Gran Via.
