Microwave and IP packet technology will increase connectivity speeds and reliability to improve the user experience for residents and businesses using voice and data services
Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, February 26, 2014
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is collaborating with the Cable & Wireless-owned LIME, a leading telecommunications provider serving the Caribbean, address the unique geographic challenges of island communications by deploying a Microwave Packet Radio (MPR) solution that will also complete the conversion of the network to an all-IP architecture during the first quarter of 2014.
Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its high-speed, high-capacity 9500 MPR throughout the several Caribbean islands LIME serves. The new system will serve as backhaul for the existing wireless networks, and dramatically increase the existing capacity and speed to greatly improve the customer experience on the islands.
The integration of the MPR into the existing 7705 SAR and 7750 SR IP/MPLS portfolio, all managed by 5620 SAM, will allow LIME to construct an end-to-end IP/MPLS network which will enable them to deliver next-gen mobile broadband services including LTE. With this new all packet network, LIME will be able to cost effectively and efficiently support the increasing demand for wireless multimedia content and business services, while greatly increasing network reliability and robustness. Additionally, the improved connectivity will help improve local economies across the entire service area and also make it increasingly attractive to the important tourism industry.
- LIME is deploying an optimized and intelligent transport network that will support the growth of data traffic in the network coming from 2G, 3G and LTE access networks
- Alcatel-Lucent’s packet based solution for LIME includes the existing 7705 SAR and 7750 SR IP/MPLS portfolio, the 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM), and the newly deployed 9500 Mobile Packet Radio (MPR)
- The new microwave network will complement LIME’s expanding IP/MPLS mobile backhaul to improve efficiencies in the transport network as well as improving the management of ever-increasing data traffic.
- As Alcatel-Lucent continues to implement The Shift Plan, the industrial strategy to reposition the company as a specialist vendor of IP Networking and Ultra-Broadband Access, deployments such as those of LIME in the Caribbean underscore the company’s portfolio of technologies enabling telecommunications operators to deliver superfast Internet access to households and enterprises alike.
Carlo Alloni, CWC Group CTIO, said: “Our commitment to grow customer relationships and lifetime value by delivering unparalleled customer experience is based on choosing and delivering the the best ICT technology solutions. All of our clients will experience an improvement in LIME’s wireless networks and for business customers, the faster and more secure data access will help to support the growth of their enterprises. We have been working with Alcatel-Lucent for a long time on our IP network and we see the 9500 MPR as the ideal complement to that network given the synergies achieved with the use of the common management system in SAM 5620.”
Hector Nava, Alcatel-Lucent Sales Director for the Caribbean and Central America, said: “Across the Caribbean we are building an optimized and intelligent transport network for LIME that will provide better wireless voice and data access immediately while also supporting future growth to 4GLTE. Our selection by LIME reflects Alcatel-Lucent’s leadership in end-to-end IP transport networks for next generation wireless networks, and the trust placed on Alcatel-Lucent to deliver top quality projects in the region.”
