Microwave and IP packet technology will increase connectivity speeds and reliability to improve the user experience for residents and businesses using voice and data services
Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, February 26, 2014
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is collaborating with the Cable & Wireless-owned LIME, a leading telecommunications provider serving the Caribbean, address the unique geographic challenges of island communications by deploying a Microwave Packet Radio (MPR) solution that will also complete the conversion of the network to an all-IP architecture during the first quarter of 2014.
Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its high-speed, high-capacity 9500 MPR throughout the several Caribbean islands LIME serves. The new system will serve as backhaul for the existing wireless networks, and dramatically increase the existing capacity and speed to greatly improve the customer experience on the islands.
The integration of the MPR into the existing 7705 SAR and 7750 SR IP/MPLS portfolio, all managed by 5620 SAM, will allow LIME to construct an end-to-end IP/MPLS network which will enable them to deliver next-gen mobile broadband services including LTE. With this new all packet network, LIME will be able to cost effectively and efficiently support the increasing demand for wireless multimedia content and business services, while greatly increasing network reliability and robustness. Additionally, the improved connectivity will help improve local economies across the entire service area and also make it increasingly attractive to the important tourism industry.
Key Facts:
- LIME is deploying an optimized and intelligent transport network that will support the growth of data traffic in the network coming from 2G, 3G and LTE access networks
- Alcatel-Lucent’s packet based solution for LIME includes the existing 7705 SAR and 7750 SR IP/MPLS portfolio, the 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM), and the newly deployed 9500 Mobile Packet Radio (MPR)
- The new microwave network will complement LIME’s expanding IP/MPLS mobile backhaul to improve efficiencies in the transport network as well as improving the management of ever-increasing data traffic.
- As Alcatel-Lucent continues to implement The Shift Plan, the industrial strategy to reposition the company as a specialist vendor of IP Networking and Ultra-Broadband Access, deployments such as those of LIME in the Caribbean underscore the company’s portfolio of technologies enabling telecommunications operators to deliver superfast Internet access to households and enterprises alike.
