NSN wins “Outstanding Contribution to TD Technology” Award

TDIA recognizes company’s extraordinary commitment to research and standardization of TD technologies

Telecommunication Development Industry Alliance (TDIA) has recognized NSN’s impressive contribution to time division (TD) technology with its prestigious award. NSN has supported the standardization, development and harmonization of TD technology for over 15 years and is the world leader in commercializing TD-LTE ecosystems today, with deployment contracts in 6 continents*.

China’s telecommunications industry marked a milestone last year when the issuing of 4G licenses led to the official start of commercializing TD-LTE. In a recent industry seminar, TDIA, together with China Electronics News, celebrated China’s TD industry and honored the players that have contributed to the technology’s development.

“NSN’s commitment to TD technologies is unparalleled. We were the first international company to strongly promote TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE as global standards as early as 1998,” said Paul Pan, vice president of NSN for Greater China Region, at the award ceremony. “Over the past 15 years, we have played a critical role in developing and commercializing these technologies and established many important firsts** in the industry along the way.”

NSN is actively driving the global market development for TD-LTE, contributing to the creation of a rich, worldwide ecosystem and supply chain. In China, NSN has built a full value chain for TD-LTE including product management, research and development, manufacturing, logistics, global marketing, sales and services. This places NSN in a unique position to work closely with Chinese industry giants and respond effectively to their requirements. NSN is on its way to becoming the number one foreign player in China’s telecommunications industry, with the largest market share in China Mobile’s LTE tender for non-Chinese vendors and a recent LTE contract with China Telecom as new supplier. NSN is currently working with China Unicom on the operator’s LTE tender.

NSN’s industry-leading TD-LTE solution is end-to-end based on a strong Evolved Packet Core*** (EPC) and radio portfolio. At its heart is the high-capacity Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station, a multi-technology platform supporting different technologies with the same hardware while featuring a particularly low energy consumption.

** The continuing drive for innovation has given NSN a unique position in the industry to achieve a number of milestones as world’s first. In 2001, the first TD-SCDMA trial system was demonstrated in Beijing, and the first TD-SCDMA video call was made. In 2009, NSN was the first to showcase a TD-LTE femtocell demo, followed by the first 3GPP R8 compliant TD-LTE call and handover. In 2012, NSN reached a record-breaking speed of 1.6 Gbps over TD-LTE-Advanced. In 2013, NSN enabled the world’s first live TV broadcast via TD-LTE for an international marathon in Xiamen. Today, NSN is at the forefront of TD-LTE development and innovation with its award-winning technology. One of its recent technology launches is a powerful TD-LTE 8-pipe radio module for Band 41 spectrum, which enables operators to make use of the 2.6 GHz spectrum band.

In 2011, the company was recognized with a China Information Industry award for innovation and leadership in TD-LTE, and in 2013, with the TD-LTE Market Development Award in GTI Summit.

*** NSN’ Evolved Packet Core (EPC) solution consists of Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway). It has unique 4D-scaling capabilities that help operators prepare for mobile broadband growth in four dimensions: data throughput handling to accommodate data traffic explosion; signaling capacity to deal with smartphones; a large number of data sessions for multiple data connections per subscriber; and service intelligence for operators’ revenue and resource optimization. Among our EPC customers are leading operators such as NTT DOCOMO and T-Mobile USA.
