“There are many examples of how competition stimulates innovation, creates market opportunity and delivers better customer value.  This winning formula contributes to economic development,” she added.

tw telecom (NASDAQ:TWTC, news, filings) is a leading provider of managed services including Business Ethernet, converged and IP VPN  networking solutions for enterprises throughout the U.S. and to global locations.

Ms. Herda’s comments were part of a business forum panel that discussed the opportunities and threats facing broadband networks, as well as the role of the FCC in ensuring the principles of competition are applied to markets as technology continues to evolve.  Other panelists in addition to Ms. Herda included moderator Gene Kimmelman, Director of Internet Freedom at the New America Foundation and CEO panelists Jeff Gardner, President and CEO, Windstream; Rolla P. Huff, Chairman, CEO and President, EarthLink; and Laura W. Thomas, CFO, XO Communications.

Ms. Herda also addressed the recent suggestion that the Telecom Act of 1996 needs to be rewritten. She also noted that the ’96 Act was designed to encourage competition and investment, highlighting that it has been successful in doing so.  Further consensus from the panel was that the FCC has what it needs to enforce the principals and policies of the Act regardless of technology implementations.
