AT&T’s Policies Receive 100 Percent Score in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index
Dallas, Texas, December 11, 2013
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees have found a great place to work and grow at AT&T, according to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation. For the 10th year in a row, AT&T* made the organization’s “Best Places to Work” list for LGBT employees. AT&T scored 100 percent in this year’s HRC Corporate Equality Index (CEI).
“It means something when reputed organizations like the Human Rights Campaign grade us a perfect 100,” said Debbie Storey, AT&T senior vice president of talent development and chief diversity officer. “Not just because we value their analysis, but because they validate that we’re truly an inclusive company. Young people who want a great place to work in 2013 and beyond are going to companies that promote diversity and inclusion. We believe we set the bar – and we appreciate that the HRC recognizes that.”
In 1975, AT&T was one of the first Fortune 500 companies to adopt a non-discrimination policy toward sexual orientation. In 1999, it was one of the first to adopt domestic partner benefits for LGBT employees. Today, AT&T is proud to be one of the “Best Places to Work” for LGBT employees.
Among others, AT&T supports employees with:
- Health insurance benefits offered to domestic partners beginning in 1999. Since 2005, legally recognized partners are offered benefits as well.
- Qualified pre-retirement survivor annuity pension offered to spouses and partners.
- Health insurance plan coverage for transition-related treatment of transgender individuals.
- Required training for new hires on AT&T’s non-discrimination policy, including sexual orientation and gender identity.
- Outreach to the LGBT community including recruiting, marketing, community involvement and support for LGBT equality.
AT&T’s 11 employee resource groups allow all employees to take part in the company’s mission to support diversity. These groups help employees learn, network, collaborate and develop professionally. All of these groups, including LEAGUE at AT&T – the LGBT and Allies Organization at AT&T – are supportive partners in AT&T’s business. LEAGUE at AT&T was founded by employees in 1987. It is the first LGBT employee resource group in corporate America.
“LEAGUE at AT&T is thrilled that AT&T has once again scored 100 percent on CEI’s ‘Best Places to Work,’” said John C. Cramer, chief executive officer of LEAGUE at AT&T. “This score shows AT&T’s commitment to supporting its diverse workforce on a daily basis. LEAGUE values the emphasis that AT&T places on maintaining a supportive and safe workplace environment for its LGBT employees. With this being the 10th year in a row that AT&T has earned this honor, we look forward to seeing the company continue to earn this score for years to come.”
