NSN enhances TD-LTE base station transmission power and capacity for Band 41 #1GBperday$

Accelerates adoption of LTE TDD spectrum, improves smartphone experience

Nokia Solutions and Networks today launches a powerful TD-LTE 8-pipe radio module for Band 41* spectrum. The new base station component will enable operators to use the 2.6 GHz LTE TDD spectrum band to meet booming demand for mobile broadband. Supporting up to 120 MHz of channel bandwidth, this is the industry’s highest capacity 8-pipe radio module. It delivers twice as much transmission power output than previous versions, substantially improving the user experience, particularly at the edge of a cell’s coverage.

NSN’s new base station radio module will help satisfy growing demand for high-quality mobile broadband and voice services, which is now a deciding factor in choice of operator**. It extends NSN’s Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station family with an 8-pipe radio module that supports the growing number of countries adopting the 2.6 GHz LTE TDD spectrum, including Brazil, China, India, Japan, Russia and the USA. The radio module is fully future-proof, ready for the evolution of carrier aggregation and capable of supporting an unprecedented 120 MHz of bandwidth that can deliver more than 1.2 Gbps of total site throughput from a single unit.

“For subscribers, quality means everything. With our high-capacity base stations, mobile subscribers will have the outstanding service experience they are looking for,” said Marc Rouanne, executive vice president, Mobile Broadband, at NSN. “We are introducing the industry’s most powerful TD-LTE 8-pipe radio module with support of 120 MHz bandwidth and 160 Watts transmission power. As the new NSN radio module is capable of supporting LTE-Advanced technology with the possibility to aggregate up to three carriers, three-fold peak cell data rates can be achieved compared to the performance of the currently deployed commercial networks. This enables the world’s leading operators to provide unrivalled data speeds to their customers and also showcases NSN’s global leadership in the LTE domain, as proven by the first deployments of carrier aggregation in South Korea last summer.”

The TD-LTE 8-pipe radio module supports three sectors in a single unit even for remote configurations, unlike conventional remote radio modules that run only one sector per module. It needs no air conditioning and can be pole-mounted or placed near the antenna tower base, substantially reducing installation and maintenance costs.

As a concrete proof point, the U.S. operator Sprint which has recently selected NSN as its partner to roll out a nationwide LTE TDD network will be using NSN’s new high-bandwidth 8-pipe radio module for its LTE TDD deployment in Band 41 spectrum range.

NSN leads the market in the development of TD-LTE technology. The company has a series of TD-LTE speed records under its belt including a demonstration of world record throughput speeds of 1.6 Gbps where data was sent and received in simultaneous downlink and uplink connections. To enable seamless use of both FDD-LTE and TD-LTE services, NSN also demonstrated the world’s first data traffic offloading and load balancing between TD-LTE and FDD-LTE using its Single RAN Advanced Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station. Nearly all smartphone manufacturers have announced support for dual-mode smartphones, enabling operators to deploy TD-LTE as an integral part of their overall mobile broadband service.

Notes
* Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology has two variants: Time-Division Duplex (TDD) LTE, also referred to as TD-LTE, LTE TDD or LTE in TDD mode, and Frequency-Division Duplex (FDD) LTE, also referred to as FDD-LTE, LTE FDD or LTE in FDD mode. 3GPP Band 41 is a global band covering 194 MHz of LTE TDD spectrum in the 2496 MHz to 2690 MHz range.

** NSN’s Acquisition & Retention Study 2013 found that 47% of respondents believe that operators should offer excellent network quality even if they charge a higher price for it.
