Akamai Web Security and Enterprise Web Experience Technologies Implemented to Support “Protect and Perform” Strategy
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Akamai Technologies, Inc. (AKAM), the leading provider of cloud services for delivering, optimizing and securing online content and business applications, today announced that itBit, a global exchange for virtual currencies – including Bitcoin – has deployed the company’s Kona Site Defender, along with Enhanced DNS (eDNS) and Global Traffic Management (GTM) solutions.
According to itBit, the company’s exchange is designed to provide its members with a world-class transparent, highly available and deeply liquid marketplace for virtual currencies trading. The use of Akamai’s Kona Site Defender, in conjunction with eDNS and GTM, is designed to help itBit protect the exchange from DDoS and other web attacks while at the same time optimizing performance for users around the globe.
“We’ve built a highly sophisticated trading and order execution platform that can be used globally, so it is extremely important that our system is accessible around the clock,” explained Rich Teo, CEO, itBit. “Akamai helps us ensure that we have powerful security against web attacks as well as important optimization capabilities to enhance overall performance. Having the right ‘protect and perform’ strategy in place is critical when your entire business exists online.”
The Akamai services that itBit currently leverages include:
Kona Site Defender: Cloud-based detection, identification, and mitigation of DDoS and Application Layer attacks without sacrificing site performance and availability.
eDNS: Designed to ensure that itBit’s primary DNS servers are not directly exposed to end users, reducing the risks of cache-poisoning and denial-of-service attacks.
GTM: An Internet-centric approach to global server load balancing offering high availability and responsiveness to user requests. Unlike traditional hardware-based solutions that reside within the datacenter, GTM is a fault-tolerant system that makes intelligent routing decisions based on real-time server and Internet conditions.
“Security, performance and high availability are critical to success in the business of virtual currency trading,” stated Rich Bolstridge, chief strategist, Financial Services, Akamai. “If your exchange is perceived as vulnerable, if it’s down, if users can’t conduct trades, members will seek alternatives. Our work with itBit helps the organization deliver world class service and security to their customers.”
