AT&T and Infiniti Red Bull Racing Rev Up for 2014 Season

AT&T to help Infiniti Red Bull Racing prepare for seismic rule changes affecting the sport next year

AT&T* is making sure that Infiniti Red Bull Racing, four-time winners of the FIA Formula 1 Driver and Constructor World Championship™, is ready for one of the biggest changes in the sport in years.  AT&T is helping Infiniti Red Bull Racing stay competitive for the 2014 season by connecting them across the 20-plus race tracks so the Team can focus on winning races.

“Formula One is one of the most technically advanced sports in the world,” said Christian Horner, Team Principal, Infiniti Red Bull Racing.  “The 2014 changes will cause a major ripple effect across our entire sport, radically transforming the car’s design.  AT&T is helping us meet these challenges by providing solutions that empower our engineers no matter where in the world they are working.”

The change in the sport’s rules requires teams to develop new cars that complement the smaller, more efficient, 1.6 liter turbo-charged V6 hybrid engine – a first for Formula One.  The change impacts almost every aspect of the design of the cars.  As a result, Infiniti Red Bull Racing needs to start virtually from scratch, building a new car prototype to fit the new specifications.

Enter AT&T. The company is providing communications that are two and half times faster than provided in the 2013 season. It will allow close collaboration across Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s 500 plus workforce and critical partners in four key locations – the team’s HQ in Milton Keynes, U.K.; their engine manufacturer, Renault, based in Viry, France; the Team’s wind tunnel in Bedford, U.K.; and the trackside Team at any of the 20 race circuits around the world.

“We are constantly upgrading the car – during a typical season we carry out thousands of upgrades.  Next season we expect this number to significantly increase – that’s why we chose to broaden our relationship with AT&T.  They have a proven track record to deliver the tools that we need to work securely and quickly around the globe.” said Matt Cadieux, Chief Information Officer at Infiniti Red Bull Racing.

“I have no doubt that AT&T’s blazing fast network and innovative solutions will continue to play their part in helping to take Infiniti Red Bull Racing – which is already world-renowned — to the next level” said Andy Geisse, Chief Executive Officer of AT&T Business Solutions.

AT&T’s support will touch almost every aspect of Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s operations.  This is a sport where speed is vital, and where hundredths of a second can be the difference between winning and losing.  Faster, higher bandwidth links between any one of 20 plus race tracks around the world and the Team’s U.K. HQ means trackside engineers can quickly send performance information back to the factory and optimize and improve the performance of their cars.  This is especially critical during the high-pressure race weekends.

Increasing the bandwidth and resilience to the Team’s ‘off-site’ wind tunnel will bring Infiniti Red Bull Racing engineers immediate benefits.  The wind tunnel is a vital tool for the Team as they hone the design of the 2014 car to make sure it is as aerodynamic as possible.  Testing in the tunnel generates huge amounts of data, which needs to be analyzed by engineers at HQ.  The new links will allow near real-time analysis of the information – and directly contribute to the process of improvement and refinement that the team undertakes.

Security is a key concern in the competitive sport of Formula One.  AT&T will provide Infiniti Red Bull Racing with a highly secure network, both at the Team’s factory and at the temporary race venues around the world. In addition, the Security Event and Threat Analysis (SETA) service from AT&T will help to minimize the risk of losses due to security incidents.

AT&T is also providing a managed IP based telephony and Unified Communications service, which will make it easier for engineers to work together, as well as free up IT administrative resources and reduce costs. For example, a Team employee will be reachable from their PBX extension number, whether at the Team’s HQ in Milton Keynes or trackside on the other side of the world (where the regulatory environment permits).  Because the call will stay ‘on-net’ from most trackside locations, there are no expensive international or call roaming charges.
