Alcatel-Lucent to provide Japanese cable operator Tonami Satellite Communications Television with Ultra-Broadband Access solution

First Japanese cable operator to use Alcatel-Lucent 7360GPON FTTH technology to provide Internet access speeds up to 1Gbps ~ 2.4Gbps to customers in Tonami City area

Paris/Tokyo, November 19, 2013 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is to upgrade the current access network of Japanese cable operator Tonami Satellite Communications Television to become a 100 percent fiber infrastructure.

Using Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology, Tonami will be able to dramatically increase its current highest 120Mbps downlink high-speed Internet access by a factor of up to 20 times, replacing its existing HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax) network in the process. This will allow Tonami to improve its triple-play (TV, data, voice) service to its 42,000 customers in Tonami City.

Key Facts:

  • Alcatel-Lucent and systems integration partner Itochu Cable Systems will supply Tonami Cable with its industry-leading (ISAM) product family including the 7360 ISAM FX and 5520 Access Management System to support GPON-enabled fiber-to-the-home (FTTH).
  • Tonami will be the first Japanese cable operator to use Alcatel-Lucent’s 7360 ISAM FX GPON-based solution to bring ultra-high speed Internet service to the homes of the citizens of Tonami bundled with voice and TV-services like HD-TV.
  • Tonami is migrating from Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) to high-speed GPON-based FTTH in Japan, enabling high Internet access speeds, more reliable than HFC.
  • Alcatel-Lucent is the worldwide leader in fixed broadband access, supporting the largest mass deployments of video, voice and data services. Alcatel-Lucent is involved in 100-plus FTTH deployments and more than 160 FTTH projects worldwide, of which more than 140 are with GPON.
  • GPON technology is a key element in The Shift Plan, Alcatel-Lucent’s industrial strategy to become a specialist vendor of IP Networking and Ultra-Broadband Access.

Quotes:

Tsuneharu Kawai, President of Tonami Satellite Communications Television, said:“We need to quickly migrate our current legacy HFC infrastructure to FTTH, to cope with the changing customer needs of cable TV and high speed internet access services, for faster downloading, interactive gaming, cloud services, or to accommodate for the growing number of 4K/8K TVs, tablets and smartphones at home. For this, we wanted an FTTH solution that is globally proven and will allow us to easily move to 10G and 40G.  Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON FTTH solution was a perfect fit for our needs.”

Martin Jordy, head of sales for the Asia-Pacific region of Alcatel-Lucent, said: “Tonami is looking to upgrade its legacy HFC network to keep pace with customer demand for super fast broadband and better services. With an estimated 27M cable TV subscribers, Tonami is demonstrating to the rest of Japan’s cable market that GPON is a cost-effective, long-term solution for these needs. We’re delighted to bring our technological leadership position as a global GPON provider to help Tonami achieve their goals.”
