Hospital Galenia Becomes the First Medical Organization to Deploy Cisco Medical-Grade Network in the Yucatan Peninsula

The Cisco MGN, Cisco recommended guidelines for building an optimal network, helped the hospital to obtain the Joint Commission International certification to operate under the highest standards in service and technology in order to fulfill the requirements of the medical tourism market

México, D.F. 7 October 2013.‑ Hospital Galenia, the only private tertiary care hospital1 in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, has selected Cisco® Medical-Grade Network (MGN) in its infrastructure in order to offer high-quality medical care to its national and international patients through the integration and interoperability of each functional area, optimizing interactions among healthcare participants, medical applications, and hardware components.

The Cisco Medical-Grade Network (MGN) solution is comprised from a suite of products, services and supporting materials for designing a reliable network that has the potential to provide, seamless and highly secure health data exchange and communications for the healthcare community. These characteristics are detailed within the MGN architecture, which is developed based on the best practices of a robust healthcare environment.

Hospital Galenia is the only hospital in Mexico holding the Certificate of Medical Attention Establishments granted by the Joint Commission International (JCI), Accreditation Canada International (ACI) and the General Health Council (CSG), allowing it to fulfill the international standards for the medical tourism market.

With its partner Factor Integración, Cisco deployed in Hospital Galenia:

  • Switching: Using Cisco® Catalyst 4500 and 3750 for the Local Area Network Core distribution and access
  • Wireless: Cisco® Aironet® 1200 to support wireless devices and unified communications applications
  • Unified Communications and voice: Cisco® CallManager, Unified Messaging, and Unity Voice Mail.
  • Data Center: UCS (Unified Computing System) servers for databases, for applications and for interaction with electronic files.
  • Security: Through ASA, Cisco® Enterprise Networks provides an industry proven architecture for securing protected health information and other patient confidential information in order to comply with Health Information Privacy rules and provide proper access to electronic medical records and hospital information systems.

In strict alignment with the account and engineering teams, the solutions implemented in Hospital Galenia were endorsed by the Center of Innovation of Cisco México, which was established in 2010 to promote Cisco® technology and services integrated with Cisco’s ecosystem of partners. This has enabled the delivery of tailored solutions to solve business problems, improve business processes and foster innovation in the healthcare arena, to ultimately provide the best quality to patients in the provisioning of care.

Additionally, the Nursecall system from Rauland-Borg has been integrated into the IP network and linked to the Cisco® Unified Communications Manager, to optimize the hospital workflow, thus ensuring faster response to patient needs, while reducing strain to the nursing staff.

The architecture deployed in Hospital Galenia will allow the hospital in the near future to add applications such as real-time location tracking for patients and assets, telemedicine, and digital signage among others.
