Largest Social Network in Europe Moves to BTI Systems Solutions for Significantly Improved Data Center Interconnectivity

Supporting More Than 200 Million Accounts and 100 Million Active Users, VK Deployed BTI’s Intelligent Networking Software and Systems to Improve Performance, Lower Costs, and Reduce Footprint and Power Consumption

OTTAWA and BOSTON – September 9, 2013

BTI Systems, the software and networking leader empowering content and service providers to capitalize on trends in cloud services, mobility and Internet video, today announced that VK (VKontakte), the largest social network in Europe, has deployed BTI Systems networking solutions to interconnect its data centers.

Founded in 2007, VK offers users the ability to connect through private messaging, sharing photos, managing online communities, and uploading, searching and streaming media content. Available in three languages including English, Russian and Ukrainian, more than 100 million active users around the world use VK to make new connections and reconnect with past friends.

“We reached the point where we had to make a move to support our massive growth and demand for increased bandwidth capacity,” said VK Principal Engineer Oleg Lyubimov. “With six data centers in St. Petersburg and points of presence in Moscow, Frankfurt and Stockholm, we needed a solution that would enable us to scale, simplify management and operations, and reduce costs. BTI worked closely with us to achieve our goals and move toward connections of 100G. We are saving more than 35% in footprint space and more than 15% in lower power consumption. All while drastically improving performance and reducing operational complexity.”

BTI worked closely with certified reseller Muvicom to secure the VK customer win. “BTI provided a compact, easy-to-use networking solution built from the ground up to address the needs of innovative companies like VK, by delivering massive scale combined with operational ease and simplicity,” said Muvicom CEO Denis Vainer.

“In only six years, VK has filled a significant market need to enable European citizens to be in touch, especially Russian-speaking users,” said BTI Director of Sales David Rapoport. “Success in a social network means high availability, great performance, and the ability to create and support a broad range of services and communities. VK’s team realized they needed to move to converged packet optical networking to future proof their infrastructure and to keep up with escalating capacity demands. We look forward to continuing to work with VK and our partner Muvicom to ensure VK’s goals are met and exceeded.”

VK has deployed BTI’s Data Center Interconnect solution, including the BTI 7000 Series as well as the BTI proNX Management and Control Software. The BTI 7000 Series is a compact, modular and easy-to-use intelligent networking system purpose-built to unify packet and optical service delivery into one platform for network-layer consolidation, offering VK a scalable 10G to 100G growth path and simplifying network deployment and operations. To expedite service provisioning, simplify monitoring and management, and speed time to deployment, BTI’s proNX software integrates seamlessly into any operating environment. VK additionally plans to deploy the new BTI 7800 Series Intelligent Cloud Connect as they add 100G capabilities.

VK chose BTI not only for the innovative software and systems offered, but also because of the strong and experienced local support and presence in Russia, making the deployment and transformation of the network seamless, easy and rapid.

BTI provides solutions that address the cloud and data center network choke points by significantly improving inter-data center connectivity between data centers and users; data centers to peering points; data centers to data centers; and data centers to partners. The company recently started shipping Intelligent Cloud Connect, an open software-rich platform that combines network intelligence and application awareness with significantly expanded capacity and scale. Intelligent Cloud Connect increases cloud connectivity performance – quadrupling capacity and scale, reducing latency by half, and increasing network applications performance by as much as 10 times – while significantly improving operational efficiencies, network control and service innovation compared to legacy solutions.
