AT&T Take Your Shot equips three winners to create films with smartphones
Dallas, Texas, August 28, 2013
Three aspiring filmmakers may have just received the biggest break of their careers. AT&T* and ISAtv** revealed the names of three lucky amateur filmmakers who will bring their film ideas to life with the help of successful Asian-American filmmakers, using the latest AT&T devices. This rare access to YouTube celebrities Jon M. Chu, Wong Fu Productions and Freddie Wong is a part of the AT&T Take Your Shot campaign.
On August 23, AT&T announced the pairing of three winners and mentors at www.takeyourshotfilms.com:
- Wong Fu Productions will mentor Brian Zhang, 21, of Glenview, Illinois, a mechanical engineering student at University of Michigan. His submission is entitled Luv(Sic), a story of an online writer who falls for one of her biggest critics. Wong Fu Productions is an independent production company known for their popular YouTube channel. They created recent AT&T viral hits “Away We Happened” and “When It Counts.”
- Jon M. Chu will guide Robynne Guillermo, 18, of Oahu, Hawaii, who is attending Hawaii Pacific University this fall. Her submission is entitled Grandma and Grandpa Adventure, the story of kids who discover just how exciting their grandparents’ lives were while flipping through photos in scrapbooks. Chu is a director and screenwriter best known for the movies “Step Up 2: The Streets,” “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and “The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.”
- Freddie Wong will work with Alexander Natalizio, 18, of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, an advertising/film student at Winona State University. His submission, entitled Weight of Love, is the story of a quiet co-ed who doesn’t want people to know that she is weightless. She eventually falls for another student who helps her try to come to terms with the condition while trying to keep her from floating away. Wong is a filmmaker, musician, VFX technician, and competitive gamer.
Launched on July 30, Take Your Shot called for amateur film enthusiasts to compete for a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to work with famed Asian-American filmmakers who will mentor and help them create a short film based on their idea. More than 3,000 film ideas were submitted in the first two weeks on TakeYourShotFilms.com, followed by more than 6,500 votes during the one-week fan voting period to help determine the winners.
The finalists will collaborate with mentors for the next couple of months to create a short film. AT&T Mobile Film Festival on October 14 will showcase three short films at www.TakeYourShotFilms.com.
“We congratulate the winners, and wish them the best of luck in starting this exciting journey,” said Jennifer Jones, VP Diverse Markets, Mobility. “Take Your Shot is a social media initiative to mentor and nurture those craving to turn their story ideas into reality. With this campaign, AT&T hopes to inspire Asian youth and give them the technology and mentorship to pursue their dreams.”
Take Your Shot is the third innovative, interactive digital campaign created by AT&T to engage Asian youth, following the successful Away We Happened and When It Counts campaigns in 2012. Both campaigns invited Asian youth to join the creative filmmaking process. Away We Happened garnered more than 13 million YouTube video views and When It Counts more than 6.5 million views.
