Telesystem Selects Cyan for Major Network Upgrade

Ohio-based Provider Enhances Network to Ensure Five Nines Availability and to Upgrade Service Portfolio

TOLEDO, Ohio & PETALUMA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Cyan (CYNI), a leading provider of software-defined networking (SDN) and packet-optical solutions for network operators, today announced that Telesystem has begun a network upgrade that will ensure its commercial, government, and wireless backhaul customers are able to receive ultra-reliable Ethernet and wavelength services. The upgrade, covering a broad portion of northwest Ohio and reaching into southern Michigan, employs Cyan Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms and provides card, shelf, and fiber route redundancy throughout the network. These network enhancements will ensure 99.999% availability for Telesystem’s IP-based services, allowing no more than 5.26 minutes of downtime per rolling year. Telesystem also will utilize Blue Planet, Cyan’s software-defined network (SDN) system, to improve service orchestration and network visualization.

Doug Ward, director of network operations with Toledo-based Telesystem, stated that, “It is of paramount importance that we deliver services to our customers exhibiting the highest possible levels of reliability. Many of our customers, healthcare for example, simply cannot operate effectively without the critical and always-on network services Telesystem provides. Cyan was able to satisfy our requirements not only through state-of-the-art packet-optical technology, but also with sophisticated software tools that allow us to move toward a software-defined network architecture.”

The Telesystem network upgrade employs the 2.8 Tbps Z77 and 600 Gbps Z33 platforms configured for complete component redundancy. This configuration not only satisfies Telesystem’s stringent service availability mandate, it also delivers the capacity headroom required to scale the network as bandwidth demands increase. Telesystem also will take advantage of Blue Planet apps such as Planet Operate, Planet View, and Planet Inventory to further enhance operational efficiencies.

According to Cyan co-founder and vice president of North American Sales Eric Clelland, “Telesystem is leveraging best-in-class hardware and software technologies to ensure their customers are able to benefit from the most reliable, high-capacity services. By leveraging Blue Planet software, Telesystem is moving toward giving their customers greater visibility into, and control over, the services they purchase.”
