Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology Delivers the Goods with Comcast Business Ethernet and Advanced Voice Services

High-Performance Data and IP Voice Solution Increase Bandwidth for 3D Manufacturing While Eliminating the Need for a Redundant Data Center

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – July 9, 2013 – Comcast Business, a unit of Comcast Cable, the nation’s largest video, high-speed Internet and phone provider to business and residential customers, today announced that the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT), a leading non-profit organization based in East Hartford, Conn., is using Comcast Business Ethernet services and PRI Trunks to improve its information technology (IT) operations. The infrastructure enhancements will enable CCAT to better serve its IT clients as well as support the transfer of high-resolution manufacturing files between its main facility and its local Advanced Manufacturing Center. In addition, CCAT is able to effectively reduce its redundant server infrastructure and achieve significant maintenance cost savings.

With expertise in IT, manufacturing, efficiencies, alternative energy, and education and workforce development, CCAT offers a wide range of services to high technology firms, military defense organizations, educators, entrepreneurs and public policy makers both locally and nationally. CCAT leads efforts in providing client-based solutions in IT, manufacturing optimization, cutting-edge machining, and research and field-test advances in lasers, additive manufacturing, and modeling/metrology. In addition, the organization promotes energy planning and policy initiatives, and develops and implements innovative approaches to ready the next generation of skilled, high-tech workers.

These initiatives require an inordinate amount of bandwidth to support the high volume of three-dimensional (3D) computer drawings that need to be transferred on a regular basis between CCAT’s headquarters and its Advanced Manufacturing Center, located two miles down the road. It soon reached a point where CCAT was forced to duplicate its servers simply to speed up this process.

Comcast installed a 100 Mbps Ethernet Private Line that connects CCAT’s headquarters to its Advanced Manufacturing Center, which dramatically reduced the redundant server infrastructure and associated maintenance time by one-third while also providing a secure connection between the two locations. Comcast also installed a 5 Mbps Ethernet Dedicated Internet line to enhance CCAT’s ability to tailor IT solutions – including exchange/email server hosting, hosted services, website development and hosting, and virtual desktop services and support – for the area towns, schools and libraries it serves. CCAT customers can access their email, servers and desktops via the cloud, even if CCAT’s direct connection is interrupted. Additionally, Comcast’s PRI Trunks interface with CCAT’s existing telephony system to provide Voice over IP (VoIP) capabilities that offer a clearer alternative to the organization’s previous telephone provider.

“As an increasing number of organizations embrace the idea of a mobile workforce, they are finding that a technology solution that allows them to access their data whenever – and wherever – they need it, can not only improve interoffice collaboration but also manage costs,” said Charlie Tzoumas, vice president of Comcast Business in Connecticut. “Our Ethernet and voice services provide reliable access to this critical information quickly, while also offering our customers the scalability to adjust their bandwidth as their needs – and the needs of their customers – continue to evolve.”
