United Fiber & Data Completes All Network Engineering for Build Across Hudson and Passaic Rivers

  • United Fiber & Data announces completion of all prep work for fiber-optic network’s river crossing across Hudson and Passaic Rivers
  • Crossings provide customers with link to high-profile trading and financial exchanges in New York/New Jersey metro area
  • River crossing is built along geographically diverse pathway

YORK, Pa. – June 11, 2013United Fiber & Data (UFD) announces today that it has completed its engineering and preparation of the river crossings that transport its new greenfield fiber-optic network across the Hudson and Passaic Rivers in northern New Jersey. The crossings connect 165 Halsey in Newark, New Jersey, to Manhattan and other high-profile trading and financial exchange locations in the New York and New Jersey metro area. The completion of the river crossings finalizes a segment of the UFD network that connects Manhattan southward to Linden, New Jersey.

Consistent with UFD’s larger network plan, the river crossings were completed across a geographically diverse route. This route introduces logical and physical diversity to a network that runs along alternate pathways between its endpoints of New York City and Ashburn, Virginia. The crossings also represent another step toward the completion of the UFD network, which was launched on February 28, 2013, and will traverse more than 375 miles when complete.

UFD’s first-of-its-kind network passes through New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland along a route that bypasses the more traditional I-95 corridor most service providers follow. The UFD network follows a pathway outside of the East Coast “blast zones” and will connect top financial market exchanges and global destinations for Internet peering and high-bandwidth networking.

“The completion of the river crossings marks another milestone in our state-of-the-art fiber-optic network build,” states Christopher Lodge, President and Chief Operating Officer of UFD. “The crossings enable a critical link for our customers seeking to connect to key financial exchanges in New York and New Jersey. As we build this network, we continue to recognize the value this alternate pathway will deliver for customers and partners that require lowest-latency fiber that offers security, diversity and protection for their data and information streams.”

Construction of the UFD network began on March 1 and is slated for completion in the fourth quarter of this year. The all-fiber network will be ready to deliver 100 Gbps services when finalized, allowing UFD to offer a full suite of networking and bandwidth solutions.
