U. San Sebastián Offers Cisco Wireless Platform for Multiple Connections on Campus

The university updated its voice, data and wireless connectivity to serve more than 26,000 students and 2,500 teachers.

SANTIAGO, Chile, May 9, 2013.- Universidad San Sebastián, founded 23 years ago in the city of Concepción, has implemented one of the most advanced infrastructures in the Chilean educational sector. Using Cisco® technology, the new network is designed to integrate voice communications, data and connectivity.

The information and communications technology staff designed a plan that will provide the more than 26,000 students and 2,500 teachers with the most expeditious Wi-Fi access; the ICT staff also had the aim of improving communications within the university, by integrating the telephony, network, surveillance cameras (CCTV) and Internet systems.

“It seemed that we would greatly improve our communications and provide better service, without failures or downtime, especially in those critical university periods such as the beginning or end of a semester,” said Claudio Sala, systems and process engineer at San Sebastián.

“The latest trends in education at a global level indicate that the network is the foundation of technological support to teaching at all levels, and this is an example of how Cisco can properly interpret the real needs of the sector,” said Luis Rodríguez, manager of the Education group, Cisco Chile.

The most noticeable thing about this technological change for the students has been the Wi-Fi network, which has been able to absorb an average of three connections per student on campus, who can use an iPod, telephone and computer at the same time.

“Because the users’ profiles are on the telephone devices, we have been able to eliminate serious problems generated by their natural mobility. Today we can set up an office in minutes; we take the user’s telephone in case of a transfer, plug it in the network point, and that is all. The great challenge of technology is that it looks easy, even if it is not, and in that aspect Cisco makes it easy, and gives more options,” said Claudio Sala

Highlights

• The plan was developed together with Cisco and the ICT department of the Universidad San Sebastián, which allowed a gradual migration without causing any important impacts or outage.
• The infrastructure integrates LAN and WAN communications, unified communications, and wireless networks for all the branches under a centralized administration.
• The installed equipment included the Cisco Wireless LAN Controller 5508, Cisco Unified Communications Manager, and Cisco Catalyst® 4500, 3750 and 2960 Series Switches.
