Little Rock School District Announces Fiber-Optic Network Agreement with Unite Private Networks

Construction of 65 mile fiber-optic network to serve 56 school sites

Kansas City, MO (May 16, 2013) – The Little Rock School District (LRSD) is poised for major change with the signing of a long-term agreement with Unite Private Networks (UPN) to provide fiber-optic network services to the District. The nearly 65 mile fiber-optic network will connect 56 District facilities and provide a full Gigabit of bandwidth to each site. UPN plans to begin construction immediately and expects completion of the network by July 2014.

The private fiber-optic network will provide the foundation on which LRSD will be able to deploy applications to assist teachers in implementing their strategic education improvement strategy for the 25,000 students in the District. Video streaming, implementation of Common Core standards, digital content and curriculum and online assessment will all be possible with the new network.

“The network will help LRSD in our commitment to eliminate the achievement gap and boost performance with a cost-effective delivery of learning applications to students across our district,” noted John Ruffins, Director of Technology for LRSD. “The added capacity available will prepare us for future innovations in technology.”

Martin Mueller, Director of Education Sales at UPN indicated that the fiber-optic WAN will be hundreds of times faster than the District’s current network. “We are pleased LRSD has chosen us as a long-term partner and are excited to provide our solution to the largest district in the state of Arkansas. The team at LRSD should be commended for their future vision of technology and its benefit to the students.”

UPN provides high-bandwidth, fiber-based communications networks and related services to schools, governments, carriers, data centers, hospitals, and enterprise business customers located in 20 states.

“The geographic spread of the LRSD school sites across the city will create a fiber-optic network easily accessible to other customers throughout the greater Little Rock market,” said Jason Adkins, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at UPN. “We are excited about bringing the potential for Gigabit bandwidth to other customers in the area by providing cost effective high-bandwidth solutions over an advanced fiber-optic network.
