Interxion to Showcase Award-Winning Seawater Cooling Project at Symposium 2013
Santa Clara, CA – May 7, 2013: INTERXION HOLDING NV (NYSE:INXN, news), a leading European provider of cloud- and carrier-neutral colocation data center services, has been selected as a winner of the prestigious 2013 Green Enterprise IT (GEIT) Awards, presented by Uptime Institute, for its seawater cooling implementation in the Facility Retrofit category. The GEIT Awards showcase organizations that are pioneering projects and innovations that significantly improve energy productivity and resource use in IT.
Interxion will be honored at the eighth annual Uptime Institute Symposium, taking place in Santa Clara, CA, on May 13-16, 2013. As part of the Symposium’s rich agenda, Interxion will present a case study about its award-winning initiative to the event audience. The Uptime Institute Symposium is the most influential all-stakeholder, thought-leadership conference serving the global Digital Infrastructure™ industry.
Interxion’s unique seawater cooling system has reduced energy costs in the company’s 1,600 m2 Stockholm data center campus by 80 percent and carbon emissions from the campus by 48 percent. The system is able to achieve such strong results by filtering seawater through two data centers two separate times. Not only does this reduce the need for expensive and inefficient cooling equipment, but it also maximizes the use of the seawater so that only a limited amount needs to be pumped into and throughout the Stockholm campus. Plus, Interxion doubles the use of seawater by reusing the warm water to heat local offices and residential buildings before returning it to the sea. As a result, the data center campus has lowered its PUE from 1.6 to 1.09 and decreased its IT load enough to allow additional customers to colocate in the facility. These improvements were nearly instantaneous once seawater cooling was implemented.
“This has been another tremendous year for GEIT Award entries and we’re impressed with the level of ingenuity within the submissions as well as the positive impact they are having on their own business communities,” said Pitt Turner, Chair, Green Enterprise IT Awards Judges Panel and Senior Tier Certification Authority for the Uptime Institute. “It is heartening to see such creativity and innovation in so many areas where companies are striving for substantially improved, sustainable and resource-efficient solutions, while still maintaining the level of quality and resilience required by their respective businesses.”
Lex Coors, VP Data Center Technology Engineering Group and Chief Engineering Officer at Interxion, will detail the seawater cooling case study on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at 2:45pm PT in his Symposium presentation: Multiple Facility Seawater Cooling Implementation.
“We are honored to be recognized by the Uptime Institute in the Green Enterprise IT Awards,” said Coors. “Interxion has always been committed to improving data center efficiency, both in our own facilities and throughout the industry, and we consider Uptime Institute a close partner in that endeavor. I am excited about the opportunity to share what we’ve learned with the Symposium audience.”
