BTI Systems Powers Utility Telecommunications System for Missouri Electric Cooperatives

Central Electric Power Cooperative and N.W. Electric Power Cooperative Deploy BTI’s Solutions to Deliver New Wavelength Capability for Transmission System Control and Monitoring

OTTAWA and BOSTON – May 14, 2013

BTI Systems, the software and networking leader empowering content and service providers to capitalize on trends in cloud services, mobility and Internet video, today announced that Central Electric Power Cooperative and N.W. Electric Power Cooperative have deployed BTI’s Metro Networking Solutions to enhance their telecommunications capacity for their utilities. The announcement was made in conjunction with UTC TELECOM 2013, where BTI will be showcasing its solutions portfolio in Booth 154.

Headquartered in Jefferson City, Missouri, Central Electric Power Cooperative (CEPC) is an electric generation and transmission cooperative that delivers power to eight distribution cooperatives covering a 22,000 square mile area in central Missouri. Based in Cameron, Missouri, N.W. Electric Power Cooperative (NWEPC) provides dependable, high-quality wholesale power to meet all present and future requirements of its seven distribution member cooperatives in 32 counties of Northwestern Missouri. Last year, the two utility companies worked together to reduce cost and take advantage of sharing the capacity available in BTI’s DWDM equipment.

In order to deliver on this collaborative initiative, CEPC and NWEPC established a fiber optic network, which spans from Jefferson City to north of Kansas City. The basic network transport functionality provides mission-critical signaling with each electric power substation – the lifeblood of the electric power generation cooperative – for both Cooperatives. The utilities also recognized the near unlimited potential of fiber optics, and turned to BTI.

BTI’s Metro Networking Solutions provide a flexible infrastructure for reliable and simple service delivery, massive scalability and high operational value. The cornerstone of BTI’s Metro Networking Solutions is the BTI 7000 Series, a compact, modular and easy-to-use networking platform purpose-built for unifying packet and optical service delivery. Integrating MEF Carrier Ethernet compliant switching, optical layer and 4 Degree ROADM Dynamic Optical Layer, the BTI 7000 Series simplifies network deployment and operations.

“BTI Systems stood head and shoulders above the competition,” said NWEPC Telecommunications Supervisor Kirk Lee. “The BTI 7000 Series’ ROADM capabilities enabled us to efficiently deliver 10G wavelength transport services for our cooperative members throughout Northwest Missouri and future proof our corporate and secure substation networks.”

Complementing the BTI 7000 Series is the BTI proNX Management and Control Software platform. A critical component of BTI’s software-defined networking (SDN) approach, this highly scalable, centralized software platform discovers, abstracts and normalizes multivendor, multilayer complexity making this network information available for applications and system integrations. With end-to-end service management, comprehensive SLA assurance and open APIs for applications control, service providers can automate the administration of network resources, improve infrastructure efficiency and expedite the delivery of profitable high-value services, while maintaining a flexible architecture that readily adapts to changing business needs.

“BTI’s easy-to-use, intuitive software platform integrated seamlessly into our existing VMware environment, enabling us to rapidly provision services, and simplify network operations and management,” said CEPC Manager of Communication Services Scott Duncan. “With 100G-ready scalability, BTI enables us to meet our most innovative utility needs. We’re excited to see what the future holds as we evolve our relationship with BTI.”

“We are thrilled to power a state-of-the-art utility Telecommunications System for forward-thinking cooperatives like CEPC and NWEPC,” said BTI President and CEO Steve Waszak. “BTI allows these and other organizations to efficiently and effectively maintain lean operations, while ensuring premium service delivery. Providing an incredibly compelling, SDN-based solutions portfolio, BTI optimizes network resources, accelerates new services and enables innovation – helping organizations to improve margins, increase power delivery reliability and take advantage of the latest technology.”
