Selects Nokia Siemens Networks’ standardized optical platform to provide 40-fold increase in bandwidth
Netia S.A., Poland’s largest alternative provider of fixed-line telecommunications services, has become the country’s first operator to introduce 100G (gigabit per second) wavelengths in its optical fiber network. Based on Nokia Siemens Networks’ optical transport DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) platform hiT 7300* and 100 GbE (Gigabit Ethernet)** transponder, the upgraded network provides a 40-fold increase in capacity. The solution was integrated seamlessly into Netia S.A.’s existing fiber optical infrastructure provided by a third party vendor, thereby protecting its investment in its infrastructure.
Netia S.A., one of the fastest growing telecommunications operators in Poland, is a pacesetter in providing reliable and high quality services to its customers. However, increasing use of smartphones and other bandwidth intensive devices were putting a strain on the existing fiber network. Instead of replacing the infrastructure, Nokia Siemens Networks connected the third party network to its multivendor 100 GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) transponder, which was seamlessly integrated into the existing network management systems. This increased the capacity of the existing optical network from 2.5G to 100G per channel.

On December 3, 2012, Nokia Siemens Networks and Marlin Equity Partners announced that they had reached an agreement for Nokia Siemens Networks to sell its Optical Networks business unit to Marlin Equity Partners. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2013. The announcement outlined that the deal would result in the unit being established as an independent company, named Coriant, with the goal of becoming a leading provider in the optical market.
