E-TAILER REPORTS 35% MORE PAGE VIEWS AND NEARLY DOUBLE ONLINE SALES

eTAIL WEST, PALM SPRINGS, February 26, 2013 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM, news, filings), the leading cloud platform for helping enterprises provide secure, high-performing user experiences on any device, anywhere, today announced that ShopJimmy, the global leader in TV parts distribution, has implemented Akamai’s Dynamic Site Accelerator Premier and Web Application Firewall solutions to help safeguard its retail site from potential online threats while maintaining high levels of scale and performance.

To better meet customer expectations, ShopJimmy continues to enhance its online store to improve the shopping experience. After launching its site on eBay, ShopJimmy began hosting its own site and also adopted a third party eCommerce platform. However, the feature-rich platform impacted site performance. It was not uncommon for site visitors and ShopJimmy customer service reps to experience 10-30 second wait times for shopping cart transactions to complete. ShopJimmy realized slow site responsiveness was impacting sales as well as search engine results and ranking. With so much on the line, the e-tailer took measures to boost site performance and decrease load times for its customers.

“We are constantly striving to be at the forefront of new technologies and trends that drive the eCommerce industry forward,” said Ryan Zarlengo, Marketing Director, ShopJimmy. “Our site performance issues were preventing us from leading in this way. By using Akamai’s services in conjunction with our internal improvements, we are continuing to push to differentiate ourselves from our competition.”

Prior to implementing Akamai, ShopJimmy made changes to its site code, reconfigured servers, and increased server capacity, but none of these actions proved sufficient. Given the need to handle thousands of site visitors on average per day, ShopJimmy found its infrastructure buckling under the server load. With Akamai in place, ShopJimmy was able to accelerate the delivery of its site content by more than 100% on average. Performance increases pertain to both static and dynamic content such as search results, shopping cart transactions, and checkout functions.

In addition, ShopJimmy reports that the site has seen a 35% boost in page views, and supports 20% more site visitors per month than prior to using Akamai. ShopJimmy believes that these improvements have contributed to a noteworthy 95% increase in online sales and the ability to handle two to three times the number of orders per day online than it had previously. ShopJimmy also reports that it experienced a 10% increase in organic search traffic since using the Akamai services.

“Nearly half of the site visitors find ShopJimmy via search engines,” added Zarlengo. “Akamai helps ensure we’re doing everything we can to speed up our load times. Moreover, it helps us realize the full value of our third party eCommerce platform investment and increase organic search traffic.”

After implementing Akamai’s solutions, ShopJimmy reports that it has also improved its ability to absorb traffic spikes without expanding its infrastructure contributing to lower IT costs. For example, on Black Friday 2012, the site served a record number of unique visitors while offloading 82% of requests and 67% of bandwidth to Akamai.

In addition, Akamai’s Web Application Firewall service has enabled ShopJimmy to block malicious robots and spiders, and protect against potential online threats. “Our site is critical to our business and we can’t afford to be down for even a minute. With Akamai’s Web Application Firewall, we can secure our site without negatively impacting site performance,” commented Zarlengo.

“As ShopJimmy continues to enhance and improve their online store to meet customer expectations, they also need to ensure their retail site performs quickly and without fail,” said Mike Afergan, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Web Experience Business Unit, Akamai. “By leveraging Akamai’s solutions, ShopJimmy has achieved its business goals and can now maximize the impact of its eCommerce platform while providing an engaging, secure and fast shopping experience for its customers.”
