Nokia Siemens Networks enhances LTE network capacity, coverage and security

Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain – February 20, 2013

  • Unveils three Single RAN Advanced products for better capacity and coverage
  • Prevents security breaches with flexible end-to-end security architecture

Nokia Siemens Networks is launching the industry’s smallest high-power remote radio heads. The 2-pipe version is ideal for spectrum refarming deployments and a 4-pipe version is designed for use with advanced antenna systems. New industry-leading baseband integration provides up to twice the capacity for LTE and HSPA+ without additional space requirements. Industry-leading security services for LTE address latent security risks.

“We are innovating to make mobile broadband more profitable for operators. With our new products in the Flexi Multiradio portfolio, we help operators further reduce operating expenses related to GSM, 3G and LTE sites. At the same time, our innovations enable better mobile broadband service quality,” said Stephan Litjens, head of LTE product management, Nokia Siemens Networks. “High performance and secure LTE networks give operators a solid foundation for building their mobile broadband business”.

Operators are increasingly deploying HSPA+ and LTE on existing GSM frequency. The small size and high output power of the new Single RAN 2x60W remote radio head enables operators to run radio technologies concurrently with just one radio head. The Flexi Multiradio Remote Radio Head 2TX can be mounted on existing masts, avoiding the potential costs of building new support structures.

The new 4-pipe radio head targets high performance LTE networks using advanced antenna systems with four transmission and reception paths instead of the usual two paths. The Flexi Multiradio Remote Radio Head 4TX will help enhance the data rates of users at the edge of a radio cell and as a result optimize the user experience. The 4-pipe radio head has already been introduced successfully in the North American market.

Other new launches include the commercial introduction of capacity extension sub-modules that are simply plugged into existing expansion slots in the Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station, to help meet mobile broadband traffic growth. The approach ensures that operators can grow their capacity cost-effectively, in line with rising demand and without needing any extra site space.

Adding to the long list of platform innovations is the latest evolution of Nokia Siemens Networks’ Smart Scheduler, the software in the Flexi Base Station that allocates spectrum resources dynamically and efficiently to end users. For three years in a row the Smart Scheduler’s superior algorithms have delivered the industry’s highest throughput and lowest latency times. With the latest software upgrade, the uplink capacity can be enhanced by up to 25%.

All these enhancements are available or will be introduced within 2013. They will be presented at this year’s Mobile World Congress, alongside the Nokia Siemens Networks 3GPP LTE security solution, which enables operators to protect their customers at the same high levels as in GSM and 3G networks. The solution secures data between the base station and the core network with IP security without any degradation in throughput. In addition, strong certificate authority using Public Key Infrastructure ensures that only operator-authorized base stations can access the network. Efficient operation is provided by fully automated certificate life cycle management.

Network operators, customers, press and analysts are also welcome to visit the Nokia Siemens Networks Solution Experience Center in Hall 3, 3B14, at Mobile World Congress 2013, Fira Gran Via, in Barcelona, Spain, to learn more about our LTE enhancements.

Further details will also be shared during the #1GBperday$ webinar on March 20, 2013. Registration for all the #1GBperday$ webinars is open now:
