SFR launches LTE in Paris La Défense with Nokia Siemens Networks Liquid Radio

SFR has selected Nokia Siemens Networks as radio supplier to implement its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network and upgrade its existing GSM and 3G networks in major French cities. Nokia Siemens Networks’ Liquid Radio* technology will help SFR meet its growing capacity requirements and provide subscribers with an excellent 4G customer experience. As part of the agreement, Nokia Siemens Networks is supporting SFR with the launch of its 4G service with networks in Paris and Paris La Défense European business district. Today, 4G was launched commercially in Paris La Défense.

“As a long-term, trusted, technology partner of SFR, we are very excited to bring our latest mobile broadband innovations to La Défense”, said Benoit Duchêne, head of SFR customer business team at Nokia Siemens Networks. “With our Liquid Radio solution, SFR is able to deliver best-in-class mobile internet performance and accelerate the take-up of 4G.”

Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its high-capacity Liquid Radio solution built on the Single Radio Access Network (RAN)** platform with the energy-efficient Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station***, enabling data transfer speeds of up to 100 Mbps. To make the most of Liquid Radio, the company is also implementing the comprehensive mobile networks automation solution, Self-Organizing Networks (SON) for RAN. The contract also includes Nokia Siemens Networks’ NetAct network management system and a suite of associated software tools for consolidated configuration, monitoring, and network optimization across technologies.

Notes
* There is a natural ebb and flow of capacity demand on mobile networks as smartphone, tablet and other smart device users, switch between applications at different times and locations. Part of Nokia Siemens Networks’ Liquid Net, Liquid Radio self-adapts its capacity and coverage accordingly.

Through baseband pooling, Liquid Radio repositions base station components to achieve extreme scalability. Liquid Radio also manages unified heterogeneous networks to optimize broadband access. Furthermore, active antenna technology creates more compact, simpler sites that support multiradio, multi-band and multi-technology access, providing up to 65% capacity gain.

** Nokia Siemens Networks’ Single RAN including the Flexi Multiradio Base Station provides a future-proof, easy and cost-efficient path to LTE in both FDD and TDD spectrum bands via a simple software upgrade. Besides the Single RAN that supports GSM, 3G, FDD-LTE and TD-LTE, the company’s LTE telecom infrastructure offering also features the Evolved Packet Core, including Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway), transport solutions, network management system, Self Organizing Networks (SON), the award-winning Voice over LTE (VoLTE), provisioning and charging solutions and a range of professional services to plan, install, maintain and operate networks. *** The award-winning 10 Gbps-capable base station is part of Nokia Siemens Networks Liquid Radio, which is part of our Single RAN Advanced concept and was launched at MWC 2011. Geared to support high-capacity mobile broadband and enable a smooth evolution to the LTE-Advanced standard, it is also fully backwards compatible.
