The European Railway Agency and Huawei sign a Framework Contract together with other 2 companies to bid for collaboration on future studies

[Amsterdam, December 6, 2012]: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announces Huawei and the European Railway Agency (ERA) have signed, together with two other companies, a Framework Service Contract to be able to bid for collaboration in various studies, including the investigation into future rail telecommunication systems. These collaborations will contribute significantly to making rail transport in Europe safer and more competitive.

The Framework Contract sets out the rules for rail telecom consultancy services which Huawei or one of the other two companies may perform for the GSM-R, for which the ERA acts as the European system authority. As a global ICT supplier with a strong railway background, Huawei will be able to create synergies between different technologies with the ambition of laying the foundations for future rail telecom standards.

Huawei has considerable experience in dealing with GSM-R specifications and in matching technologies with the requirements of future rail telecommunication. Therefore it is a valuable partner for the ERA and it may assist the agency in the proposed study. The awarded company out of the three competitors will help define future strategies for railway communication in Europe and will also examine which migration concept is most suitable.

Norman Frisch, Business Development Railway Solutions at Huawei Technologies, commented “At Huawei we have a strong focus on R&D. The investments we have made in this field together with a global railway customer base give us the ability to provide technology views from different angles. This know-how is beneficial for our participation in European standardisation work for railway communication and we look forward to contributing to its evolution.”

The support work will be performed by Huawei’s dedicated Railway Solution team based in Europe with direct support from Huawei’s R&D departments in China for the respective technologies.
