Indosat turns to Alcatel-Lucent to supercharge mobile broadband services in Indonesia

Transition to high-performance Internet protocol and packet microwave technologies to improve speed and efficiency for video and other services and lay the groundwork for evolution to 4G LTE

Paris, December 18, 2012 – Indosat, one of Indonesia’s leading communications service providers, has selected Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) to dramatically boost the capacity of data connections that support its mobile broadband network. This move will prepare Indosat’s network for the introduction of the latest high-speed 3G mobile broadband services, and lay the groundwork for the introduction of future technologies.

Demand is exploding in Indonesia for services such as high-speed Internet access, video and social networking on mobile devices. To address this demand Indosat is upgrading its data transport and mobile backhaul networks throughout the country with state-of-the-art Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) and microwave packet transport technology from Alcatel-Lucent to support all of its mobile broadband offerings. This transformation will enable Indosat to streamline its network, helping improve performance and reliability while cutting operational costs.

Hans Morizt, Director & Chief Technology Officer of Indosat said: “Our customers are looking to access a range of video, gaming, multimedia and social networking services on their mobile devices, which requires a faster mobile backhaul network to support the resulting data traffic. At the same time, we need a network that can grow quickly and address fast-evolving customer requirements, without breaking the bank. The all-IP infrastructure from Alcatel-Lucent addresses all of these requirements, and gives us the flexibility we will need to meet our customers’ expectations far into the future.”

Rajeev Singh-Molares, President, Asia Pacific of Alcatel-Lucent said: “Indosat has been moving quickly to prepare its network for the demands of the future, and we are pleased to expand our collaboration into the mobile backhaul space. The modernization of Indosat’s network will enable them to continue the rapid expansion of their customer base, while introducing a wide array of new services without taxing their infrastructure.”
