New Data Center Enhances US Signal’s Cloud Offering

Network with added cloud offering provides true cloud redundancy.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. – US Signal, an industry leading network and infrastructure provider, announced that it has enhanced its current cloud service offering by adding an additional data center that creates a platform for its customers to have true disaster recovery and/or business continuance in a public or virtual private cloud. Having diverse data centers throughout the Midwest connected by US Signal’s high performance, low latency fiber network allows its customers to choose where they want to run their applications and storage.

During the past several years, US Signal has continued to expand its fiber optic network which is now one of the largest, fully deployed networks in the Midwest, covering Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. With over 14,000 miles of lit fiber and metro rings in 23 strategic tier-one, tier-two and tier-three markets, the US Signal optical backbone features Cisco Systems latest carrier class architecture.

“Our network and multiple data centers provide customers the ability to confidently run web, development and mission critical applications in the US Signal cloud. Because all customer data traverses over a fiber optic network that is owned and operated by US Signal, our company is able to offer industry leading low latency data transmission with overall end-to-end single carrier control. Very few providers are able to offer this complete solution today,” said Dan Olrich, chief technology officer, US Signal.

Disaster Recovery

The new data center addition comes on the heels of the company’s August VMware vCloudᆴ Powered announcement. “Pairing VMware vCloud with our additional data center, customers now have the ability to create their own automated, secure, and simple disaster recovery plans – all achieved in a public, private or hybrid cloud,” said Olrich. “By using US Signal, customers also gain geographically diverse site redundancy for their business critical applications and data storage.”

Snapshots and Tiered Storage

Beyond disaster recovery, US Signal customers can now perform and manage snapshots of their virtual machines. This grants them flexibility for testing, point and time backups, and configuration changes. “This is a capability our customers value and have been requesting. Reverting to a baseline configuration, recovering from a failed patch attempt and supporting testing or training evolutions are all examples of when snapshots have proven to be extremely helpful for customers,” said Olrich.

In addition to adding another data center, US Signal now offers tiered storage options ranging from Ultra-Fast 15K Fiber-Channel (Gold) or industry standard 7k SATA (Silver) storage for their virtual machine platform. All storage from US Signal is directly attached Fiber from SAN storage. By adding tiered storage, customers have the option to choose a solution that will meet the needs of their environment and make the least financial impact on the business.
