China Mobile selects Nokia Siemens Networks for large, multi-city, TD-LTE deployment

Beijing, China – October 25, 2012

Company extends partnership with major operator, brings TD-LTE leadership, innovation & commercialization expertise

Nokia Siemens Networks is extending its partnership with China Mobile with a new deal for the deployment of TD-LTE in three cities by the end of 2012. The deployment is part of China Mobile’s large-scale pre-commercial trial of its TD-LTE network.  Nokia Siemens Networks will deploy its TD-LTE 8-pipe radio and Flexi Multiradio Base Stations. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks will help China Mobile with Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) technology testing in Hangzhou, a technique used to offer voice calls alongside TD-LTE services.

With approximately 650 million customers, China Mobile is one of the world’s largest operators. As the demand for smartphones and mobile data services soars, China Mobile is expanding its TD-LTE network trial in 13 cities by the end of this year. This trial will increase the commercialization and globalization of TD-LTE to an unprecedented level and with a total of 20,000 base stations deployed by multiple vendors, China Mobile will create a true, pre-commercial mobile broadband network.

Through its parent companies, Nokia Siemens Networks has an over 20-year working relationship with China Mobile. When part of Nokia’s Networks business, the company was one of the first vendors to support the operator’s initial GSM network.  Nokia Siemens Networks also supported the operator’s network evolution when technology moved to TD-SCDMA and then to TD-LTE, which was deployed in phase one large-scale trials in Hangzhou and Xiamen with exceptionally good results. The cooperation between the two companies, right from the start of digital mobile communications, has resulted in Nokia Siemens Networks’ development of TD-LTE technology and its aim to create an ecosystem for the global success of TD-LTE as one of the key 4G technologies.

“Nokia Siemens Networks is once again honored to work on the multi-city TD-LTE deployment with China Mobile,” said Markus Borchert, president of Nokia Siemens Networks Greater China Region. “Our significant presence as a leading innovator in China, our strong R&D milestones in TD-LTE and our global leadership in LTE are the reasons our customers choose us, both in China and in other parts of the world.  We’re pleased to continue our groundbreaking work with China Mobile on its large-scale TD-LTE rollout.”

With its comprehensive mobile broadband and services portfolio, Nokia Siemens Networks is at the forefront of TD-LTE development and commercialization. With the leading TD-SCDMA radio solution and a TD-SCDMA to TD-LTE evolution solution, Nokia Siemens Networks has played an important role in driving TD-LTE standardization as a globally deployed technology. Nokia Siemens Networks is involved in more than half of the major field trials in China, Russia, Taiwan and elsewhere, and has commercial deals with TD-LTE network operators, including Bharti Airtel in India, MTS in Russia, Sky Brazil and STC in Saudi Arabia. A GSA report of September 2012 lists 11 commercial TD-LTE network launches around the world, with five of these being supported by Nokia Siemens Networks.

Notes:

Nokia Siemens Networks’ innovation and R&D efforts in TD-LTE most recently achieved world record TD-LTE throughput speeds of 1.6 Gigabits per second (Gbps). The commercial Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station was used to receive and send data in simultaneous downlink and uplink connections, reaching an overall speed of 1.6 Gbps. The speed record was achieved at the Nokia Siemens Networks lab in Arlington Heights, Illinois, USA, and is the company’s fifth straight LTE speed record in the past six months.

Nokia Siemens Networks successfully upgraded 20 sites in September from TD-SCDMA to TD-LTE and conducted the first TD-LTE call in the dual mode field trial network of China Mobile’s Beijing branch (Beijing Mobile). Nokia Siemens Networks is leading the way in the TD-LTE evolution in China with upgrades of the existing 1.9 GHz frequency TD-SCDMA technology to TD-LTE.

In May, Nokia Siemens Networks and China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI) jointly announced the success of the over-one-year proactive cooperative research on LTE-Advanced technology and standards. The two companies also jointly defined and conduct research for the innovative “Nanocell” concept, which can help operators address the mobile data explosion with more flexible and effective small cell deployments.
