Internap Ranks in Top 100 on 2012 InformationWeek 500 List of Top Technology Innovators for Green Achievements at Santa Clara Data Center

Honor marks the second consecutive year Internap is named to the list for data center innovations

ATLANTA – September 12 , 2012 – Internap Network Services Corporation (NASDAQ:INAP, news, filings), a provider of intelligent IT Infrastructure services, today announced that it has been named to this year’s InformationWeek 500 – a list of the nation’s top technology innovators. Ranked number 65 on the list, Internap was recognized for energy efficiency and sustainability practices at its state-of-the-art Santa Clara, Calif. data center. Internap’s Santa Clara facility features one of the industry’s most comprehensive IT Infrastructure services portfolios, including colocation, managed hosting, dedicated hosting, public and private cloud, along with a global performance-optimized IP network and a Content Delivery Network (CDN). Internap was also included on the list in 2011 for its scalable, high-density power solution, which provides a cost-effective way for colocation customers to “upgrade in place” without being required to buy more footprint.

In the construction of its Santa Clara data center, Internap implemented cutting-edge efficiency practices that deliver major operational benefits and align with its corporate commitment to utilize green data center design techniques, wherever possible, in both new and expansion projects. The 36,000 square-foot Santa Clara facility houses a variety of sustainable elements, including green power, renewable energy and more. These initiatives led to the facility becoming the first commercial data center in the U.S. and the first non-governmental building in California to receive the Green Building Initiative’s Green Globe® certification, a green building assessment and rating system. Earlier this year, the data center was also awarded LEED Silver certification and received Silicon Valley Power’s 2012 Energy Innovator Award.

Specific highlights that contributed to Internap’s green certifications in Santa Clara include:

  • Use of reclaimed water: The facility was the first commercial data center operator in California to use reclaimed rather than potable water to help cool the building, saving the equivalent of 46.5 Olympic-sized pools of potable water annually.
  • Reuse of building materials: When renovating the building, Internap reused more than 99% of the exterior structural components. Additionally, nearly 15% of the materials came from recycled content from pre- and post-consumer materials.
  • Energy efficiency: The building uses high-efficiency lighting, HVAC systems and controls that lower power consumption by more than 30% compared to similar facilities. Also, the Energy Star Target Finder tool showed a nearly 50% reduction in energy use compared to similar building types.

“We are proud to be included in this year’s InformationWeek 500 and to be honored for green achievements at our Santa Clara data center, including sustainable construction practices and significant reductions in energy use,” said Mike Higgins, senior vice president of data center services at Internap. “The Santa Clara facility has served as an important prototype for the construction of Internap data centers in other markets, and we remain committed to pioneering the science of green data center design.”

Today, Internap also announced that its data center in the Dallas Fort Worth area has achieved LEED Gold certification. The facility was the first data center in Texas to achieve the GBI’s Green Globe certification last February.

“The InformationWeek 500 has recognized the most innovative users of business technology for 24 years, and this year’s innovations were particularly impressive,” said InformationWeek Editor-in-Chief Rob Preston. “What the editors looked for are unconventional approaches—new technologies, new models, new ways of grabbing business opportunities and solving complex business problems with IT.”

The annual list was revealed last night  at a gala awards ceremony at the exclusive InformationWeek 500 Conference, which took place at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, Calif. Additional details on the InformationWeek 500 can be found online at: www.informationweek.com/iw500/.
