GLOBAL DATA CENTER SERVICES PROVIDER CYRUSONE IMPROVES COOLING EFFICIENCY, SECURITY, AND PRIVACY FOR CUSTOMERS

New proprietary racks, cabinets, and cages now available at data center facilities nationwide

Houston (September 18, 2012) – Global data center services provider, CyrusOne announced today that it is offering new proprietary racks, cabinets, and cages for all its facilities nationwide. The new server containment units improve power consumption, security, and privacy for CyrusOne customers—leveraging a design-and-assembly approach never before seen in the enterprise colocation industry.

“CyrusOne went down the path of proprietary racks and cabinets to improve certain aspects the current marketplace tends to ignore. With feedback from our customers we set out to address issues from improved airflow, shipping costs, flexibility of use, and future use protection,” said Michael Duckett, chief operations officer, CyrusOne. “The OEMs are evolving the server technology on a continuous basis. This evolution will inevitably impact the width, depth and cooling characteristics of servers so we wanted a rack and cabinet that, while efficient, provided the ability to evolve in dimension to help future-proof the investment customers are making in the server containment cabinets.”

At the core of CyrusOne’s proprietary solution is a four-post rack. The rack can be used alone in a secure cage or private data hall environment, or side panels and lockable doors can be added to convert the rack to a secure stand alone cabinet. What this means for customers is that they can purchase servers that are wider, narrower, or deeper than they had before, and they can quickly, easily, and cost-effectively accommodate the change by reconfiguring the rack to accommodate the new equipment. Cabinet doors and side panels with the correct width or length are then added to achieve the new fit.

In addition to flexible configurations, CyrusOne’s proprietary racks and cabinets offer rack and cabinet airflow optimization that ensures the most efficient cooling within the CyrusOne data center. Equipment that has airflow runs cooler and consumes less power to support compute processing. Customers choosing only the four-post rack to house servers are achieving 100 percent airflow, as there is no restriction to, around, or behind equipment. For customers requiring extra security, the doors designed for the front and back of the equipment still deliver 80 percent airflow.

“Eighty percent airflow is an industry best,” said Duckett. “Typical airflow for doors available prior to CyrusOne’s solution deliver up to 76 percent airflow.”

Aisle containment doors are another feature available to colocation customers at CyrusOne data center facilities. Designed to direct airflow such that cold air is sent where it is needed to cool equipment, and hot air is directed away, aisle containment doors further drive efficiency for the customer.

Finally, CyrusOne offers cages designed with smaller, honeycomb-shaped openings, in comparison to the material traditionally used in the industry. The innovative design offers visibility, yet has the strength of a solid wall, and it prevents hot spots in adjacent areas from impacting the climate of the caged customer space.

“It’s not rocket science here,” said Duckett. “We just took the time to figure out how to use racks and cabinets more efficiently. And we take the time to walk through with customers what configuration of our rack and cabinet offering will best serve their needs.”

The proprietary rack and server solution that CyrusOne offers has shipping and receiving cost benefits as well. In the industry, customers shipping cabinets are charged based on the cabinet’s weight and volume. Typically, a fully constructed cabinet filled with only air costs more than CyrusOne’s racks and cabinets shipped flat on a pallet for assembly at the final destination. This approach to racks and cabinets also keeps down the cost and disposal of packing materials, which is beneficial from an environmental perspective.

CyrusOne facilities accommodate the proprietary rack, cabinet and cage designs it offers customers, as well as any third party solution rack, cabinet and cage solution that a customer might prefer to install at the site.

CyrusOne offers best-in-class performance and reliability for high-density and high-availability enterprise requirements for colocation solutions. The facilities’ data center power and redundant cooling architectures use advanced components and are designed with N+1 and 2N parallel redundancies, providing 100 percent uptime with service uninterrupted. The company has customers in data center locations across the United States, London, and Singapore.
