The award demonstrates Colt’s commitment to excellence in operations
“Uptime Institute databases reveal that 70% of unplanned data centre outages are caused by operator error”, said Peter Crook, Sr. Director of Product Development at Uptime Institute Professional Services, “numerous other studies have reinforced that human error is the main risk to data centre downtime. Only through a rigorous operations and management program can that risk be mitigated.”
Following an intensive audit that scrutinised how the facility is managed and operated, the site achieved the M&O Stamp of Approval providing independent validation of the site’s operational excellence. This second award shows commitment to ensuring excellent standards are an integral part of every Colt data centre facility. The audit for the award took into consideration everything from the processes for servicing equipment and investment in training through to the effectiveness of communications to staff and subcontractors.
Phillip Collerton, the new Managing Director at Uptime Institute EMEA, said “The requirements for achieving the M&O stamp of approval are very rigorous, reflecting the critical importance of how data centres are managed and operated. Colt has embraced Uptime Institute’s Management and Operations program and obtained the M&O award for a second site, which is a remarkable achievement in itself and just reinforces the company’s overall commitment to operational excellence across its portfolio of data centres.”
Ian Dixon, VP of Operations at Colt said, “This award is another milestone for Colt and reflects our track record of market-leading operational performance as well as supporting our continued investment in people and processes. We look forward to working with the Uptime Institute to build on our two M&O awards over the coming months.”
Commissioned in 2001, the site is located 10km (6 miles) from the centre of London and is one of Colt’s largest heritage sites, potentially providing over 5,000m2 of data centre space with a total power provision of 15 MVA.
Earlier this year Colt became the first data centre operator in Europe to be awarded the M&O Stamp of Approval for its flagship London 3 site located 40km (25 miles) from the centre of London. The two awards confirm that the facilities satisfy industry-recognised criteria deemed essential to achieve full uptime potential, obtain maximum leverage of the installed infrastructure and design, improve the efficiency of operations and realise opportunities for energy efficiency.
