BALTIMORE, Md. – A train derailment west of Baltimore in Ellicott City early this morning (Aug. 21) has damaged Verizon facilities at the site of the accident. Some Verizon customers in the area may have trouble completing long-distance calls, and data services for some business and government customers may also be affected.
Verizon is awaiting the go-ahead from local authorities to gain access to its facilities at the derailment site. Verizon technicians are ready to access the damaged facilities when permission is given and will work in round-the-clock shifts until all services are restored.
The company has already restored services to some customers by rerouting network traffic to other facilities.
Verizon will provide a further update by 1 p.m. ET today.
