Huawei Completes Industry’s First Simultaneous Mobile and WiFi Service

Shenzhen, China, July 26, 2012]: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that mLab has successfully completed the industry’s first simultaneous GSM/UMTS/WiFi service test. The test marks a significant step forward in the development of convergent solutions for mobile and WiFi networks. Such solutions considerably improve the experience of end-users when switching between mobile and WiFi networks.

New mobile devices are capable of browsing internet sites and streaming high quality video that consumes high volumes of data. As mobile networks become increasingly overloaded with demand, subscribers become dissatisfied with the service they receive. To solve this, operators around the world are deploying small cells and WiFi networks to ease the pressure high data traffic is putting on their networks. Huawei’s convergent mobile/WiFi solution will deliver a better quality service to end-users and satisfy operator requirements.

Huawei’s solution allows operators to confidently deploy WiFi as a means of tackling the challenge of high data traffic. The mobile network assists in identifying and selecting the best WiFi signal, allowing subscribers to connect to WiFi without having to input their user name and password. This technology is already in commercial operation in Chengdu, China.

Mobile and WiFi networks are simultaneously set- up to provide high-quality data services of high quality and increasingly available throughput for the end- user. To further understand the benefits this of simultaneous service forset up provides to end- users, Huawei is conducting a study to analyze tiered data service distribution according to data service type and user experience to ensure service continuity for mobile networks and WiFi.

Huawei first launched its convergent solution for mobile and WiFi networks in 2011 and it has now been integrated into Huawei’s AtomCell solution, the company’s comprehensive small cell solution. This is a commitment to the development of end-user-centric small cell solutions that are strategically beneficial for global operators.
