Cisco Networking Academy Is Launched at Bairro Carioca, in Rio de Janeiro

Sao Paulo, Brazil July 5, 2012 – The new urban area in Rio de Janeiro, named Bairro Carioca, will provide workers and students with IT training through Cisco Networking Academy™. The program will be offered at Praça do Conhecimento (Knowledge Square), an initiative of the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, focusing on culture and education, which will be inaugurated Friday, July 6, in Bairro Carioca.

Cisco’s engagement with Praça do Conhecimento will introduce the Bairro Carioca community into a global education network serving over a million students in 165 countries, 25,000 in Brazil alone. About 120 youngsters from the community are expected to receive Networking Academy® training this year.

The Praça do Conhecimento at Bairro Carioca will offer two program modules: training to be either a support specialist, help desk technician, network technician, hardware installation or software application support technician, and the CCNA® certification program for systems administrators, Internet specialists, network and data systems analysts, and computer network analysts.

Bairro Carioca was built by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall and the Brazilian government, and it will include also a housing project with 2,240 apartments for families that lived in areas at risk or those left homeless due to heavy rains in Rio. The urban area will offer a kindergarten, a school, among others facilities.

Cisco also supports the Networking Academy program at the Praça do Conhecimento with teacher training and educational material. The program is also present at Praça do Conhecimento in Morro do Alemão, launched at the end of last year.
