Overture and Mila Team up to Deliver High-Bandwidth Mobile Service Across Iceland

Leading Iceland-based telecom looks to Overture for scalable 10GigE and 1GigE mobile backhaul solution to reliably, efficiently meet growing mobile network bandwidth demand

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, June 11, 2012 Overture, the preferred Carrier Ethernet edge and aggregation partner for service providers and network operators worldwide, today announced its Overture 1400 and 4800 solutions are being deployed by Iceland’s incumbent operator, Míla ehf. Owner and operator of the country’s national trunk and access networks, Míla is integrating both flexible Carrier Ethernet platforms into its existing architecture to help meet rapidly rising mobile bandwidth demand.

“At Mila, we are committed to being among the most progressive telecommunication providers in the world.  In this application, our mobile operator customers have very stringent requirements.  Our goal was to exceed those requirements and to create a new network that gives our customers many years of reliable service that will grow with them as their requirements evolve,” said Halldór Guðmundsson, director of network development at Míla. “Based on many years of success with Overture’s Ethernet over Copper products we chose Overture’s 10GigE and 1GigE mobile backhaul solution to help us develop a state of the art layer 2 optical network that will give us a competitive advantage for many years.”

The continued growth of mobile applications poses a unique challenge for telecoms operators seeking to increase revenue while simultaneously meeting bandwidth demands and optimizing expenses. And the new build-out of 4G/LTE networks brings new challenges for network capacity and performance.  Carrier Ethernet has emerged as today’s de facto mobile backhaul technology, and when configured in G.8032 Carrier Ethernet switched ring topology, the network scale and reliability can outperform SDH and SONET infrastructures.

Mila’s 10GigE mobile backhaul network architecture incorporates both the award-winning Overture 1400 and 4800 platforms in a hierarchical G.8032 Carrier Ethernet ring topology to deliver vast amounts of bandwidth, low latency service, support for LTE’s X2 interface and 20ms protection switching.

The Overture 1400 is a modular Gigabit Carrier Ethernet platform supporting 3G and 4G data services to single or multiple carriers at the cell tower. The Overture 4800 is a versatile Carrier Ethernet edge platform enabling 10GigE in numerous mobile backhaul network architectures, including core, collector, and cell tower access. With an industry-leading service differentiation and performance assurance toolkit, the combination offers a complete end-to-end service edge solution.

“It’s clear that there is no stopping the runaway growth in mobile-driven bandwidth demand, thanks to ubiquitous adoption of mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and gaming consoles. We’re seeing telecom operators worldwide adapting their networks to handle the continuing influx of demand for wireless connectivity,” said Vijay Raman, vice president of product management and marketing, Overture. “Mila are among the vanguard of operators making the bold moves needed to future-proof their networks with efficient 10GigE mobile backhaul, and we’re very proud to be working with such a forward-looking communications leader.”
