Internap Recognized for Data Center Renewable Energy and Efficiency Achievements

Santa Clara data center wins Silicon Valley Power’s annual “Energy Innovator Award”

ATLANTA – June 8, 2012 – Internap Network Services Corporation (NASDAQ:INAP, news, filings), a provider of intelligent IT Infrastructure services, today announced that it has won Silicon Valley Power’s 2012 Energy Innovator Award, which recognizes one organization annually that exhibits superior efforts in supporting energy efficiency and renewable energy. Internap received the award based on the results of its ground-breaking, energy-saving initiatives at its Santa Clara data center. Santa Clara Mayor Jaime Matthews presented Internap with the award today at the 12th Annual Energy Summit, organized by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group and held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif.

An independent panel of judges named Internap winner of the Energy Innovator Award for successfully implementing a wide range of conservation strategies at the Santa Clara data center, resulting in a 49 percent reduction in overall energy use as compared to similar building types and a perfect score of 100 from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Performance Rating System.

“Internap shows that smart, well-planned conservation initiatives can make a significant difference when it comes to energy use and environmental impact,” said Larry Owens, manager of customer services at Silicon Valley Power. “Internap’s achievement is even more notable given the massive uninterruptible power requirements of data centers, in particular, where meaningful energy efficiency is challenging to realize but is an important component of sustainability efforts for the community at large.”

Internap’s Santa Clara data center is LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC); the company’s use of high-efficiency lighting, HVAC systems and energy controls in the facility’s office area are credited for reducing power consumption by more than 30 percent compared to similar LEED certified facilities. In addition, Internap’s Santa Clara facility is the first commercial data center in the U.S. to attain the Green Building Initiative’s Green Globes® certification.

To reduce the data center’s carbon footprint, Internap has offset the office area’s electrical load by purchasing 100 percent of its electricity for this part of the facility from renewable sources. This purchase of more than 400,000 kWh of renewal energy credits is helping to avoid 487,585 pounds of CO2 per year. Additionally, Internap is the first commercial data center operator in California to use reclaimed water rather than potable water in the cooling towers. As a result, Internap saves an estimated 76,300 gallons per day and 27,849,500 gallons per year, the equivalent of 46.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools of potable water saved annually.

Internap’s Santa Clara facility offers a full platform of IT Infrastructure services including public and private cloud, dedicated hosting, managed hosting and colocation services, as well as a global Content Delivery Network (CDN) and route-optimized IP transit services.

“We are extremely proud to accept the 2012 Silicon Valley Power Energy Innovator Award for our Santa Clara data center,” said Mike Higgins, senior vice president of data center services at Internap. “Internap is dedicated to the mission of providing our clients IT Infrastructure flexibility and performance in a way that is also environmentally-friendly and efficient, and our Santa Clara facility is serving as an important prototype for delivering these attributes across our footprint of company-owned data centers.”
