EdgeCast Brings Google PageSpeed to the Edge

Leading CDN speeds up the web with edge-based, on-the-fly optimization

SANTA MONICA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

In an industry first, EdgeCast Networks today announced that EdgeCast has integrated Google’sPageSpeed front end optimization (FEO) technology into the company’s content delivery network. This major step makes PageSpeed – and the significant speed improvements it can provide for static and dynamic content – available to thousands of customers and millions of web sites. Customers can now select from many “best practice” optimizations to apply to their content, and those optimizations will be conducted on-the-fly, on the edge server closest to the end user, and without requiring any changes to site code.

EdgeCast is the first content delivery network to adopt PageSpeed across its global network, and has integrated PageSpeed into its Edge Optimizer service. Edge Optimizer is part of the EdgeCastApplication Delivery Network (ADN), a global platform for accelerating the delivery of dynamic and static content. After evaluating a number of front end optimization technologies, EdgeCast chose Google PageSpeed because it is open, extensible, and proven – and provides substantial benefits beyond regular CDN improvements.

“We’re really glad to see a major CDN vendor like EdgeCast integrating mod_pagespeed into their offering,” said Arvind Jain, director for “Make the Web Fast” initiatives at Google. “We hope this significantly speeds up websites served from EdgeCast’s edge servers. mod_pagespeed is gaining broader adoption, and we’re moving closer to our shared goal of making the whole web faster.”

The integration is the first implementation that executes PageSpeed logic directly on the edge server closest to each end user – a fundamental architectural distinction that results in major improvements in site performance. Early customer testing has shown up to a 77% improvement in site performance compared to customer origin without the service.

“Gogotech has been evaluating EdgeCast’s ADN and Edge Optimizer services, and the results have been very exciting,” said Alex Bolduc, IT director, Gogotech. “In our field, it’s critical to deliver the highest level of performance to our ecommerce clients and their customers. This solution looks to be a strong contender for further improving our offerings to Gogotech clients, and we are looking forward to seeing it develop.”

“Google’s ‘make the web faster’ initiative could not be better aligned with our mission of making the Internet faster, more efficient, and more secure,” said Hayes Kim, senior product manager at EdgeCast Networks. “Opening up PageSpeed to a significant percentage of Internet traffic is exciting, because it has the potential to improve the user experience for almost every end user in the world.”

PageSpeed will also be incorporated into the EdgeCast managed and licensed CDN software platforms, making the technology available to EdgeCast distributors such as Motorola Mobility, Dell, and the operators they serve.

EdgeCast and Google have been working closely over the past year to integrate and test this solution, and EdgeCast will continue enhancing the service with new filters, features, and functionality as Google continues to enhance the PageSpeed libraries.
