Nokia Siemens Networks wins award for Indonesia flood protection system

Jakarta, Indonesia – May 10, 2012

Social responsibility award acknowledges range of company’s initiatives in education, environment, and disaster relief

Nokia Siemens Networks has been recognized in Indonesia for its corporate responsibility initiatives including a unique early warning system for flooding; work planting trees to aid reforestation in mountainous areas; disaster relief for earthquake victims; and rebuilding schools that collapsed due to natural disasters.

The company has been honored with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Partnership and Collaboration award for the year 2011. The award is initiated and conducted by BAPPEDA (Badan Perencanaan Pembangunan Daerah), the planning and development authority of West Java. It recognizes companies that have positively contributed to education, environment, health, and disaster relief.

In 2011, Nokia Siemens Networks was involved in a number of CSR initiatives in the country.

In particular, its work on the Katulampa water weir system, enabling early warning for floods in the greater Jakarta area, was recognized. The system provides information via visual monitoring (CCTVs) and text messaging to help the government effectively maintain and operate its flood control tools and processes. The automation has considerably reduced the need for manual reporting. Since the system was implemented, the need for manual calls to deal with water levels has been reduced 100-fold from approximately 500 per day to five.

Lord Mangaraja, the occupational health and safety leader for Nokia Siemens Networks in Indonesia, accepted the award on the company’s behalf from H. Ahmad Heryawan, the governor of West Java.

“Education, environment and disaster relief are the three pillars of our corporate social responsibility program. While we have a host of initiatives around these, the Katulampa water weir monitoring system stands out as a great example of a high-value CSR initiative that uses a simple, off-the-shelf solution to deliver immense value to the stakeholders and public at large,” said Mangaraja.
