WASHINGTON, May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE:CTL, news, filings) CEO and President Glen F. Botnets are networks of personal computers that have been infected by malware and become remotely controlled by criminals who use them to send junk email, attack websites and distribute malicious computer viruses. Botnets are a major threat to our nation’s cybersecurity.

Post serves as chair of the Communications Security, Reliability and Interoperability Council, which was established by the Federal Communications Commission and is developing best practices that industry can use to limit cyber attacks and provide greater security for Internet communications and transactions. He also serves on the president’s National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee.

During the event, Post described how CenturyLink initiated its own botnet remediation program six years ago after noticing an escalating pattern of malicious software attacks that were taking control of computers and linking them into botnet networks designed to launch spam, cyber attacks and financial crimes that put personal information and business data at risk. This program continues to evolve today.

“CenturyLink actively seeks opportunities to work with government and industry to make the Internet safer and more secure for our customers,” Post said. “Our combined capabilities and competencies put us in a stronger, more effective position to counter the threat of botnets and improve the security of the Internet.”

CenturyLink supports the voluntary principles developed by the Industry Botnet Group to promote the sharing of expertise and resources to combat botnets.
