- Consistent user experience across geographies key to successful rollout and adoption
MUNICH – May 24, 2012 – Akamai Technologies GmbH, the leading cloud platform for helping enterprises provide secure, high-performing user experiences on any device, anywhere, today announced that Siemens Industry, a division of Siemens AG, is using Akamai® Web Application Accelerator in support of the company's global deployment of Microsoft SharePoint. As a result, Siemens Industry has seen performance gains of approximately 50 percent without incurring costly infrastructure investments.
Siemens Industry has more than 100,000 employees located in 130 different countries. In an effort to streamline the company’s online collaboration process, Siemens Industry decided to standardize on Microsoft SharePoint as its global Web publishing platform. Doing so was intended to provide a consistent user experience globally while at the same time reducing the complexity inherent in hosting content management systems from different vendors depending on geography and regional preferences. The consolidation would also allow Siemens Industry to host the application in a single data center, further reducing infrastructure costs.
"Using Akamai's Web Application Accelerator solution, we were able to create the framework for providing an optimal experience worldwide for users of our SharePoint application," said André Graf, Manager, CoC Internet Intranet + Gruppe Online Marketing of Siemens AG. "Achieving superior performance, without incurring significant internal infrastructure build-out, is crucial for ensuring that we meet the needs of customers, partners and employees. With Akamai, we can offer a predictable user experience, even in the face of increasing traffic."
An Akamai customer since 2004, Siemens Industry knew it could count on Akamai to deliver a superlative user experience for the globally-accessed SharePoint application. Features such as dynamic caching, routing and connection optimization as well as security help ensure quick and reliable application delivery over the Internet. As important, Akamai has been able to support significant improvement in performance to users in China, where traditionally response times were considerably lower than in other regions, and information was frequently delayed or lost. The use of Akamai Web Application Accelerator has allowed Siemens Industry to cut content delivery times by 50 percent for users in China.
"Leading Enterprises and Governments have already begun to change the economics of how they deliver their most critical applications to their customers, suppliers, and employees,” said Mark Vargo, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Akamai EMEA. “The benefits are profound. Using Akamai, it makes the public Internet feel like a private extension of their own infrastructure, giving them a massive competitive advantage not only economically but with their ability to react quickly to changing demands – it makes large enterprises nimble again. Siemens is one of the most innovative companies leading others in how to take advantage of this new way of cloud computing and we are proud of this partnership.”
Web Application Accelerator is part of the Akamai Terra Enterprise Solutions product family which is intended to empower businesses to leverage the cloud for application adoption without borders while eliminating costly networks and specialized hardware.
