Ciena’s 100G solution equips AAPT with a bigger and smarter network for greater capacity, reach and lower latency
Sydney, Australia and Linthicum, Maryland, USA — 04/02/2012
AAPT, one of Australia’s largest telecommunications carriers, and Ciena® Corporation (NASDAQ:CIEN, news, filings), the network specialist, today announced the first commercially-available 100 Gigabits per second (100G) inter-capital network, operating between Melbourne and Sydney.
The 100G service, which launched on April 1, is powered by Ciena’s market-leading 6500 Packet-Optical Platform equipped with WaveLogic™ coherent optical processors to enable delivery of 100G wavelength services. AAPT’s internet, Ethernet and IP VPN customers can now connect at speeds up to 100G, satisfying the increasing demand for high-bandwidth capacity throughout Australia.
AAPT CEO David Yuile said AAPT was the first telecommunications infrastructure company to market this service in Australia, providing such high capacity between inter-capital cities.
“AAPT is responding to customers’ requirements for increased bandwidth mainly driven by cloud, storage and Internet usage. Three years ago, 1G was the usual customer requirement and now it is being replaced with 10G bandwidth orders.
“The added attraction of this network upgrade is that it is on our shortest path, taking less than 5 milliseconds between Melbourne and Sydney. When you couple AAPT’s network capacity to this speed, it is a very attractive proposition for banks and financial institutions,” he said.
Ciena Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific, Anthony McLachlan said Ciena’s solution had allowed AAPT to enhance its network for additional capacity and at a lower cost.
“This will give AAPT an opportunity to introduce new revenue-generating services, further differentiating it in a competitive market. It is a key plank in AAPTs NBN aggregation strategy and will continue to support even faster, more resilient products and services to the enterprise market,” he said.
Ciena and AAPT have a long-standing relationship. In 2011, AAPT upgraded its network with Ciena’s next-generation Carrier Ethernet Service 5410 and 5150 Service Aggregation Switches.
