Urging the public to embrace IPv6 in preparation for the ‘World IPv6 Launch’ in June

(Hong Kong – 29 March 2012) NTT Communications Corporation’s wholly owned subsidiary in Hong Kong and Macao – NTT Com Asia today announced that the company will work closely with the Internet Society Hong Kong (ISOC HK) to roll out the HKSAR Government sponsored ‘IPv6 in Action’ project. As the Network Partner, NTT Com Asia supports the project with its top-ranked IPv6/IPv4 network connectivity and highly reliable data center resources coupled with professional IPv6 consultation.

“With the explosive growth of smart and networked devices both commercially and domestically, the transition to IPv6 – the next-generation Internet protocol is inevitable,” said Mr. Walter Fung, Vice President, Network Business, Global Network Business of NTT Com Asia. “According to industry figures there are close to 11.7 million* IPv4 addresses currently allocated to Hong Kong; fewer than two IPv4 addresses per head of population thus the readiness of both enterprises and households on the smooth transition to IPv6 for is imperative.”

“We are grateful for NTT Com Asia’s sponsorship for the project through its state-of-the-art technologies including its IPv4/IPv6 vIP-Net Premium Internet Service with data centre services. With its support we are able to progress with the industry-wide, collaborative initiative to enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness as an Information and communications technology hub,” said Mr. Charles Mok, Head of IPv6 in Action Project and Founding Chairman of ISOC HK. “NTT Communications has been at the forefront of fostering IPv6 development, and their support is vital to the success of this project.”

Sponsored  by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO), the ‘IPv6 in Action’ project aims to help the general public and small to medium enterprises to better understand the IPv4 address space exhaustion and IPv6 issue, provide guidelines on the selection of IPv6 services. The three-year campaign features an IPv6 thematic website (http://ipv6now.hk) which is enabled by NTT Communications IPv4/IPv6 Dual Stack Service and highly available data centre service.

NTT Communications currently operates one of the largest Tier-1 IPv6 backbones in the world. Its network provides comprehensive end-to-end support for IPv4/IPv6 dual stack, which ensures a seamless transition to IPv6. The company has contributed to the development of the IPv6 protocol and pioneered world’s first commercial IPv6 service in 2001.
