Cisco Urges More Students to Choose a Technology Career at 2012 Academy Summit

Gathering in the State of Mexico aims to inspire students to learn networking skills

MEXICO CITY, 13 March 2012 – To help motivate a new generation of engineering students to choose information and communication technologies as a field of professional development, Cisco is organizing the Cisco Academy Summit 2012, with the theme “Technology in the 21st Century: Connect, Collaborate, Update,” on 15 March. It is the fourth such summit that Cisco has hosted in Mexico.

According to research developed by IDC for Cisco, the demand for networking skills currently surpasses supply and will continue to do so for some time. The availability of information technology professionals may affect some markets or IT adoption rates unless organizations make the necessary investment in intellectual capital to avoid shortages of certified professionals.

The Academy Summit is the only event in the IT industry in Mexico open to students and instructors who wish to understand the importance of professional IT certifications and to explore the job openings offered by Cisco Systems de Mexico and some of Cisco’s partners.

Topics for this year include:

  • Cisco’s vision of technology
  • Success factors for engineers
  • Employment prospects
  • Academy evolution: Next steps for Mexico
  • Curriculum updates
  • Sessions on security and networking

The summit is organized by the Cisco Networking Academy™ program. The program, established in 2000, represents the world’s largest classroom, with more than 4 million students participating around the world since it started operations. In Mexico, it is one of the largest programs outside the U.S., with more than 50,000 students enrolled this year nationwide.

The Cisco Academy Summit is expected to reach more than 1,000 students as well as representatives from local and federal government offices, and deans and general directors from higher education organizations. The Academy Summit is taking place at the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM), Estado de México Campus, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., on 15 March.

Entrance is free; however, attendees must register in advance at www.asummit12.org and bring a donation for Un Kilo de Ayuda, an organization that supports low-income communities with food.

The Academy Summit is sponsored by Cisco Learning Partners, Cisco Certified Partners, the ITESM Campus Estado de México, America Digital, Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas, Teachers Without Borders, and Pearson Ed.
