Signature event in Macon, GA, attracts over 350,000 visitors annually
Macon, Ga. – Mar. 16, 2012 – Birch Communications, a leading IP-based telecom and managed services provider to small- and medium-sized businesses, announced today that it will be one of the lead sponsors of the 30th annual International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, Georgia, March 16-25, 2012.
The festival has become one of the Top 20 Events in the South, Top 50 Events in the U.S. and Top 100 Events in North America. It has grown from a three-day festival with 30 events, into a 10-day celebration featuring hundreds of events.
“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to host the gala event which opens the Cherry Blossom festival in our hometown of Macon, GA,” said Vincent Oddo, Birch president and CEO. “The International Cherry Blossom Festival allows the residents of Macon to showcase the great beauty of greater Macon area and hospitality of our residents. Birch is privileged to participate each year.”
Macon resident William A. Fickling, Sr., a man who possessed a deep appreciation for beauty and a passion for horticulture, began raising Yoshino cherry trees in 1952. This led to the planting of approximately 500 Yoshino cherry trees all over Macon in 1973. Since that time, the number of Yoshino cherry trees in Macon has grown to over 300,000. In 1982, the first Cherry Blossom Festival was held to celebrate the beauty of the trees and to honor Fickling. The Fickling Family Foundation continues to donate thousands of cherry trees to Macon residents each year and their generosity helps maintain Macon’s distinctive designation as Cherry Blossom Capital of the World.
Each March, Macon becomes a pink cotton-spun paradise of delight as over 300,000 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in all their glory. And for 10 days, festival-lovers are treated to one of the most extravagant displays of springtime color in the nation as they visit the town referred to by Congressional Records as the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World.
