AT&T To Launch “The Heritage Calendar: A Celebration of the N.C. African-American Experience”

Nominations Are Open for Honorees for the Inaugural 2013 Edition

Raleigh, North Carolina, March 30, 2012

AT&T*-North Carolina today announced plans to launch “The Heritage Calendar: a Celebration of the NC African-American Experience” and began accepting nominations of honorees for the 2013 Inaugural Edition.

The project will honor men and women of all races who have contributed significantly to the lives and experiences of African-Americans in the state. In addition to monthly honorees, the calendar will also highlight dates of significance in North Carolina and nationally.

“I am excited, especially for our children, to celebrate the achievements and successes of these sometimes unsung heroes who have given so much of themselves to inspire others, improve our communities and make North Carolina and the world a better place to live,” said Cynthia Marshall, president of AT&T North Carolina.  “The contributions made by those who will be honored in the calendar have played an invaluable role in enriching the fabric of diversity for our state. We are looking forward to recognizing them and helping share their stories with future generations.”

AT&T has plans to provide a printed version of the calendar, as well as an online version, in addition to interactive materials which educators can use in classrooms statewide.

Primary partners on The Heritage Calendar project will be The News & Observer, Capitol Broadcasting Company/WRAL-TV, The School of Journalism and Mass Communications at UNC-Chapel Hill, and the State Department of Public Instruction.

Nominations for the 2013 inaugural calendar must be received by April 30, 2012.  The selected individuals will be honored at a gala unveiling in October in Raleigh.  Nominations should include a biography not to exceed 300 words; a head shot photograph, and local contact information.  Information should be sent by email to NCHeritageCalendar@att.com or by U.S. mail to N.C. Heritage Calendar, 300 S. Brevard St., Suite 1522, Charlotte NC, 28202.
