Urban Communications Selects MRV Optical Communications Systems for its Next Generation Network

Canadian service provider increases network capacity, deploys advanced services, simplifies management with MRV’s OptiSwitch® Carrier Ethernet access and LambdaDriver™ WDM transport platforms

CHATSWORTH, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– MRV Communications™, Inc. (OTCQB: MRVC.PK – News) (“MRV” or the “Company”), a leading provider of optical communications network infrastructure equipment and integration and managed services, today announced that Urban Communications Inc., a Canadian telecommunications provider, has selected MRV’s end-to-end optical Ethernet solution based on OptiSwitch® and LambdaDriver™ optical Wave Division Multiplexer (WDM) metro transport. This combined network solution will dramatically increase the capacity of Urban’s fiber optic network and enable the deployment of high-bandwidth, revenue-generating services. Urban will utilize MRV’s optical communications systems to immediately deploy mission critical applications at speeds up to 10 Gbps today with a path to scale up to 100 Gbps in the future. The solution will also deliver a full suite of advanced Internet, voice, video and broadband services to its commercial, residential and public sector customers in metro Vancouver and Victoria.

“By deploying MRV’s unified optical transport and carrier Ethernet solution, Urban is now able to meet the growing needs of our customers with superior reliability, quality and security,” said Leslie E. Maerov, President of Urban Communications Inc. “The solution provides the flexibility needed to seamlessly scale Urban’s fiber optic network for increased capacity without the need to lay additional fiber, allowing us to realize significant savings.”

MRV’s solution delivers significant value to service providers that are ready to roll out new services to grow their revenues. The combination of OptiSwitch as Ethernet intelligent access and LambdaDriver as core optical transport for Metro and regional services can deliver the required capacity at a price point which guarantees a strong return on investment while leveraging fiber network assets.

“Today’s network is strained from Over-the-Top content and exponential traffic growth and providers must evolve their networks to achieve economies of scale,” said Dave Stehlin, SVP, Global Sales & Marketing for MRV’s Optical Communications Systems™ (OCS) division. “Our field-proven solution enables service providers like Urban to increase network capacity and deploy complex, high-bandwidth services using multiple classes of service through a sophisticated management application all while extending their competitive edge.”
