Calix Expands PON/RFOG Leadership with New 725GE Optical Network Terminal

North America’s leading RF return ONTs now optimized for smart grid and coexistence with 10G PON

ATLANTA, GA—November 15, 2011—Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX, news, filings) today announced the introduction of the 725GE optical network terminal (ONT), an enhancement to North America’s most widely deployed family of RFOG-capable ONTs. The 725GE is built on the latest version of the RF over glass (RFOG) Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) standard, and includes a second Gigabit Ethernet (GE) port, which is ideal for smart grid applications. This ONT is the latest addition to the industry’s most extensive ONT portfolio, and adds a fifth ONT to the Calix family of RF return ONTs. In addition to the 725GE, Calix offers the 725GX single family unit, two versions of the 763GX multiple dwelling unit (MDU) ONT and the 767GX for business services. Calix RFOG ONTs are now deployed in over 100 communications service provider networks across North America.

“As our television offerings continued to grow and became more interactive, it was clear that we needed an ONT that could support RF return,” said William S. Helmly, president and COO of South Carolina based Home Telecom. “With the Calix RF return ONTs, we have been able to deliver the very latest in television services with interactive features, video on demand and DVR services. Now, with the addition of the 725GE ONT, we have a much more flexible option to provide video solutions that support both RF and IPTV, allow more flexible home networking and are ready for 10G PON overlay in the future.”

The 725GE ONT features many Calix industry-leading features like 1 gigahertz (1 GHz) RF support and robust filters for coexistence with next generation 10G PON standards, and is the only fully managed RFOG device on the market. A key complement to the Calix family of RF return ONTs, the 725GE ONT optimizes the delivery of advanced broadband, voice, and two-way video services, including interactive program guides, impulse pay-per-view (IPPV), video on demand (VOD) and interactive digital video recording (DVR). As smart grid technology emerges as a viable source of new revenues and service differentiation for many service providers and electric utilities – the availability of a second GE port enables easy connection to Ethernet-enabled smart meters for two-way communication of smart grid data.

“The ONT plays a critical role in any fiber access deployment, defining the array of current and future service capabilities to the home and often the operational efficiency with which these service can be implemented,” said Kevin Pope, senior vice president of product development for Calix. “The 725GE ONT is the product of over 10 years and eight generations of ONT refinements that are reflected in not only its rich, targeted feature set, but the elegance by which it assists with migration to future services and technologies. We believe that service providers looking to combine the latest interactive video services with new opportunities like hybrid RF- and IP-based video services and the evolution to next generation fiber access standards will find the 725GE ONT optimally suited to meet their service requirements both today and well into the future.”

The Calix 725GE ONT will be on display at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo this week in Atlanta. Stop by the Calix booth (#1729) for more information.
