Sprint Statement on the Federal Communications Commission Order to Reform Intercarrier Compensation and the Universal Service Fund

WASHINGTON – Oct. 27, 2011 – Today the Federal Communications Commission issued an order to systematically reform Intercarrier Compensation and the Universal Service Fund. In response, Charles McKee, Sprint(NYSE:S, news, filings) vice president for federal and state regulatory affairs, issued the following statement:

Sprint applauds the FCC for undertaking critical reform of the Universal Service Fund and the Inter-Carrier Compensation system.  For more than a decade, consumers and competition have suffered as a result of a broken and antiquated regulatory regime which discourages broadband investment by subsidizing outdated services and technology.
“The Commission’s decision to transition to a system of bill-and-keep for terminating traffic and curb wasteful traffic pumping schemes is vital to a healthy and efficient market for both voice and broadband services.  The reform of Universal Service in a manner that focuses on the broadband technology preferences of consumers will better promote competition.
Sprint looks forward to reviewing the details of the order and working with the FCC and the states to implement today’s reform and further rationalize the ICC and USF regimes.”
