NTT Singapore Upgrades High-Speed IP Backbone Connection between ASEAN and Europe

Improved telecommunications link between Singapore and London offers enlarged bandwidth of 10 gigabits per second with low network latency

Singapore, 1 September 2011 – NTT Singapore, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTT Communications Corporation, today announced an upgraded high-speed Internet Protocol (IP) backbone connection between ASEAN and Europe that offers greater bandwidth and faster connectivity.

The improved telecommunications link, which directly connects the Singapore and London Points of Presence (POPs) in NTT Communications’ Global IP Network (GIN), offers a bandwidth of 10 gigabits per second (Gbps). The 10Gbps bandwidth is almost 65 times larger than the pre-upgrade bandwidth of 155 megabits per second (Mbps).

Henceforth, NTT’s customers in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand will be able to transmit and receive data via the direct Singapore-London link with a network latency of about 200 milliseconds (ms) or less. This represents a shorter transmission delay compared to an existing high-speed link which indirectly connects Singapore to London (via Japan and the US), which has a network latency exceeding 300ms.

Like the rest of NTT’s GIN, the improved Singapore-London link complies with Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), which supports more IP addresses with greater network routing efficiency compared to IPv4. In addition, the upgraded link is fully redundant since the Singapore and London POPs are configured with multiple backbone cable systems, ensuring round-the-clock network availability.

The benefits of the upgraded high-speed direct link will be available to NTT’s customers with no additional cost and network downtimes.

“NTT Communications is the only global Tier 1 Internet Service Provider based in Asia, as well as one of the world’s leading telecommunications companies. In recent years, we have seen huge growth in telecommunications traffic between ASEAN and Europe. Hence, this upgraded IP backbone connection between Singapore and London is a timely move to provide customers with high-bandwidth, low-latency, IPv6-compliant telecommunications services with full redundancy and round-the-clock network availability,” said Mr Takeshi Kazami, President and CEO of NTT Singapore.

Customers in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand will be able to enjoy the high-speed Singapore-London link beginning today. Visit www.sg.ntt.com or call 6438-3101 for more information.
