EdgeCast and PeerApp Join Forces on Operator CDN Solution

Joint Solution to Improve Delivery and Economics of Internet Content Delivery

SANTA MONICA, Calif. & NEWTON, Mass. –The software division of EdgeCast Networks, the world’s fastest and most reliable content delivery network (CDN), and PeerApp, the leading transparent caching provider, today announced a comprehensive content delivery solution for network operators.

The collaboration combines EdgeCast licensed CDN software, which empowers carriers to operate their own CDN on their network, with PeerApp’s UltraBand transparent caching platform, which enables carriers to deliver Internet video and other over-the-top content with higher quality and reduced network costs. Combined, these technologies will let operators cache all content – managed and unmanaged – that is carried across their networks.

The solution is intended to help operators reduce costs and improve quality of service – both of which are threatened by the immense pressure placed on networks by the explosion in end user demand – all while enabling operators to generate new revenues on traffic that traverses their network. Both traditional CDN and transparent caching are needed in order to allow operators to capture and manage the broadest set of content entering their networks. Deploying this integrated solution today will immediately enable operators to monetize their caching infrastructure while significantly lowering operating costs. Over time, additional benefits will result as the two technologies are more deeply integrated.

“CDNs cache and deliver content based on paid agreements with content owners, so they only address ‘contracted’ content. Other traffic that may be causing network problems is left largely unaffected,” said Aditya Kishore, senior analyst, Heavy Reading. “Conversely, the transparent cache is deployed by operators to intercept traffic based purely on its impact on delivery costs and network congestion. Both approaches use edge caching as a solution, but have different objectives. Operators can combine the two approaches to help alleviate congestion, improve QoE and cut transit costs on one hand; but also generate incremental revenue and create a place in the online video distribution value chain, on the other.”

“This comprehensive caching solution will put operators back in control of their network traffic,” said James Segil, president of EdgeCast Networks. “With one investment, operators will increase revenue, realize enormous cost savings, and be far better equipped to scale their networks in the face of continually growing demand.”

The combined architecture will include functionality that lets operators use a single set of caching configurations for content, regardless of publisher relationships, capturing more content without disrupting application functionality. It will also provide the ability to monitor performance and administer the platform through a single interface, delivering new operational efficiencies.

“Transparent caching and operator CDNs have each emerged as valuable tools for operators responding to the surge in demand for Internet content,” said Robert Mayer, CEO of PeerApp. “By integrating them into a single solution, EdgeCast and PeerApp will maximize operators’ ability to both deliver and monetize this content.”

The combined offering is available immediately, and deeper integration and additional features are planned.
